A 20-year-old man died on Wednesday from dengue fever, becoming the first person in Singapore to die from the disease during this current epidemic.

Mr Ang Yong Han, who recently graduated from the Institute of Technical Education, fell ill on May 22.

What started out as a fever later worsened to high fever, and he also felt weak and uncomfortable, said his aunt Madam Yeh, 56, housewife who spoke to Chinese evening papers, Shin Min.

He went to the Tan Tock Seng Hospital's (TTSH) emergency department last Thursday and was diagnosed with viral fever. After being given a drip, he was sent home. When his condition did not improve, he went back to the hospital's emergency department again in the wee hours of Friday. But after waiting for five hours, he left to go to a general practitioner near his home, said his mother Madam Yap Geok Kuan, 45.

He was eventually admitted to TTSH on Saturday night. By Monday he was transferred to the hospital's intensive care unit, where he died three days later. Mr Ang, an only child, was to have enlisted in National Service on Thursday.

He had received blood transfusions in the hospital also had a breathing tube inserted into his chest.

His father, Mr Ang, 56, a vegetable wholesaler, said in Mandarin to Shin Min: "He is very filial and often helps me with delivering vegetables. I did not think his fever would be so serious, and he would end up dead. I am heartbroken."

I am heartbroken he left after a 5h wait. Was he ever seen by doctor?

Last wed, my mum had to wait for 8hrs for a bed at TTSH. From 1pm till 9pm+. TTSH is really out of beds. They try to chase every patient out of their wards everyday.

The doc did attend to my mum upon admission at A&E. Its the wait for a bed thatz very very long. [sleeping]

and most cases are in home breeding. everyone must do our part. if not, the entire neighbourhood could be affected.

a couple of months back, i took my aunt to SGH A&E... waited from 10pm to 230am

there were only 2 doctors on duty, and a huge crowd was waiting (ATs on my left, pinoys on my right)

this is a big problem

if want to import more people, then make sure the basic infrastructure/public facilities can cope! [mad] [mad]

It is sad to hear he died from dengue. I am now still at home recovering from dengue. Seriously its no joke, high fever for 4-6 days, went to hospital on the 6th day cause platelets count drop to 58. On drip for 3 days then slowly recover.

So all please take note of your environment.

Quite suprised the first victim is a young man. I thought old folks and kids were more vulnerable due to their weaker constitution in general.

Agree on this, need people to be more conscious not to leave stagnant water around.

And shame on those who refuse to let NEA check their house. NEA should come down hard on these people.

Looks like the dengue is getting worse, and could not control the cases from spreading?! [rolleyes]

Agreed. We should at least do our part by allowing NEA officer to check our house and everyday check for stagnant water in our house. Although the mosquito might fly from elsewhere into our house, but at least our own house should not breed any mosquito.
