Singapore Starts Cleaning Up Oil Spill After Two Ships Collide

"Singapore deployed anti-pollution craft and patrol vessels to clean up an oil spill caused by the collision of two bulk carriers.

About 100 metric tons of fuel oil leaked after a bunker tank on the South Korean-registered Oriental Pioneer was damaged in the collision with the Bahamas-registered Atlantic Hero, the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore said in a statement. The accident occurred about 6.6 kilometers (4 miles) south-west of Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal, it said today.

No one was injured and port operations and traffic in the Strait of Singapore are unaffected, the authority said. The two vessels are now anchored.

A total of 10 patrol and anti-pollution craft have been deployed to clean up the oil spill. The authority is coordinating the action with other government agencies and ship owners, it said in the statement.

The Oriental Pioneer is beneficially owned by Tokyo-based Nippon Yusen K.K. (9101), according to data compiled by Bloomberg. The company

Hppened near Pedra Branca, our famours rock.

Is this spill 33,000 barrels considered big?

http://www.brecorder.com/top-news/1-front-top-news/214694-ship-collision-causes-33000-barrel-oil-spill-off-singapore.html

SINGAPORE: An oil tanker and a bulk carrier collided off Singapore on Friday, causing a crude oil spill, the Maritime and Port Authority (MPA) said.

The Libyan-registered oil tanker Alyarmouk collided with the Singapore-registered bulk carrier Sinar Kapuas about 11 nautical miles north-east of Pedra Branca, east of Singapore.

"Alyarmouk reported that one of her cargo tanks sustained damage, resulting in some spillage of crude oil," the MPA said in a statement.

V. Ships UK Ltd, which manages Alyarmouk, estimated that 4,500 tonnes (33,000 barrels) of Madura crude oil had been spilled from the tanker, it added.

There was no report of injury and traffic in the port and the Strait of Singapore was unaffected.

Alyarmouk was travelling from Tanjung Pelapas, Malaysia to China, and Sinar Kapuas from Hong Kong to Singapore, when the incident occurred, the MPA said.

Two oil spill response companies have been activated to combat the spill, which might have also affected northern parts of the Indonesian island of Bintan, the MPA said.

SINGAPORE – A serious oil spill on the Bukit Timah Expressway is causing a massive traffic jam, and affecting nearly a dozen bus services at SMRT’s Woodlands bus interchange.

The spill is just after the Mandai Road exit towards Pan-Island Expressway.

SMRT said this has caused a traffic jam tailing back to Woodlands Avenue 1, 2 and 3.

SMRT said the bus services affected are: 178, 187, 858, 911, 913, 925, 950, 960, 961, 963 and 966.

The Land Transport Authority and Singapore Civil Defence Force are now trying to clear the spill, which is said to be so bad that it has "trapped everyone in the interchange".

SMRT said it does not know what caused the spill, but that it was not caused by its buses.

The people who are responsible for spilling oil or causing massive road jams should be made accountalbe for it.

Either jail or heavy fines.

Right now, they just walk away like nothing happens and live to repeat again.

You pay ERP to get less traffic congestion, but these people who create congestions are not being make to pay for it !

That's bad. It flowed into drains and into canal/reservoir? :o

Accident in the early morning.  Since 254 am apparently

From 3am till morning...so they intend to let it flow until the tanker dry up.

Thanks for the vid. Looks to be rather light product but I can't tell what it is, maybe some sort of refined palm product (palm olein or palm stearine).

Ah wells not too bad then.
