Dad in law gonna collect his new car from a PI soon.

The salesman asked him to go down to settle his downpayment with cashiers order tmr, but the car is only ready for collection on Monday.

Is this the normal procedure? Shouldn't he settle the downpayment only on the day of the collection?

Pls help...

For new car collection directly from agent, they will ask you to settle the bill 3 days before you collect the car. I assume same for PI

quite normal la.....personal cheque on a Friday will clear late Monday since banks don't clear cheques on weekend, so no time to finalised company internal docs and release key of new car [:(]

cashier's order on a Friday can finalised docs and release key for Monday collection.....unless your cashier's order from monopoly bank [laugh][laugh]

Update:

The dealer suppose to hand over the car on Monday. But he said there is a last minute new ruling (i.e. new car inspection) so can only collect the car next week?

Is there such a rule? I searched the Onemotoring site, and found no such ruling.

My experience as I had just collected mine in May 13.

I doubt there's no such rule as to clear the payment # of days in advance.

For all cars that comes to Singapore. There is a need to do a few inspection before it can be hand over to the dealer. Normally before deliver to dealer, car will be hold at custom or VICOM to do certain testing. Example inspection and testing for emission etc. Normally it takes 2 to 4 weeks to clear. After which the car will then be delivered to the dealer. There will be another visual inspection to be done before it can handle over to the buyer.

This is what happened to mine.

Waited 4 weeks (April mid to May mid)

Was informed car delivered to dealer on Tuesday.

Went to check out my car on Wednesday, played with it for a while, was also told to settle outstanding payment.

I requested to settle the amount upon handling over also knowing the amount to be make so I can be prepared.

Thursday, rushing for the inspection but told its on Q.

Friday, inspection was done. Dealer needs to do COE registration as well as obtaining Car plate number. Sending car for washing and waxing.

Hand over was told to be Monday.

Monday morning went over, check car features if all are working, workmanship, insurance paper work, sales agreement, hand over documents etc.

Did the payment, take the car key, Off I go. Every thing on the spot.

Happy as ever.

If they says that your car is due for inspection, be prepared to wait for days or weeks. Just check with them what KIND of inspection are they talking. If it's just visual checking by LTA, it should be fast. If it's the first part where it takes 2 to 4 weeks. Think its up to you to tell them only clear outstanding upon collection.

Thanks Wayne.

The unsettling thing is that the dealer asked my father in law to pick up the car on Monday, only to delay claiming that there is a last minute inspection.

There should not be any issue to collect the payment only upon collect the car. How could it be when collecting yet saying can't collect due to last min inspection but still expected to pay in advance?

I seen some people experience such cases where after the payment is done. The money was not pay to the bank but misuse by the sales person instead. And somehow it's getting common. If payment to be made, probably you might want to talk to their Boss and ensure he or her is aware and do a written letter.

So far my experience in either new or pre-own cars, its always downpayment if cheque need to settle in advance, but if casher order (this is as good as cash) can be done on the day of collection.

New car. 40% depo. Alr paid 15k. Collection next Monday but requesting tomorrow full balance depo either in cheque or internet banking. When i ask for invoice before payment. They say have to wait next Monday. Is it normal? I mean when I made a Payment, would wish a receipt or some kind to show i make a payment.

Best is to issue cashier order and pay directly to the company. My PI photocopy one set for me to keep and this act as an invoice to show that payment has been made to them.

Cashier order can be paid on collection that day right? So no need to go tmr to pay in cheque? I wanna pay on collection day in cash. The sales say need to bring cash to bank etc etc

Normally the PI will want to bank in the payment before they hand over the car to you that is the norm. I can understand your anxiety caused it happened to me as well.If you still feel unsafe you can make a trip down to your AD or PI showroom to take a look at your car.Make sure the chassis number is tally with what they told you.

Just to add on. During the day of collecting my car while i was guided thru by my sales on the function of the car the finance company called me asking if i have collected the car and if it is all right for them to release the loan amount to my PI. I was really surprised that the finance company will actually do this cause my first car no one call to verify if i have collected my car. Kudo to the finance company
