They are very tough ppl. or (ming ju ) in chinese, they resists the russian, now even the western with the most modern weaponry cannot take it. its not about winning the battle , but winning the war in long term, u can beat them into hidding, but they will drag u to death .

There is so much history that has been destroyed in Afghanistan, by the wars and the Taliban.

It's really sad considering the history dates all the way back to the times of Alexander the Great and even beyond that.

I was encouraged to read about some excavations being conducted and how some structures have survived, but so much has already been lost.

Were there already factions then?

I see the pictures like they were quite advance.

But seems like the rich and the poor gap was big.

Really sad to see what war can do to a country

Brits tried but lost, Russia failed, US bogged down.....this afghani should be respected as what they are....warriors! If US and Russia din use them as pawns in their powerplay they could have been a bettercountry.....and US shouldnt have abandon them after the russia retreat. But all are history now....sad!

For those interested in stories about an earlier Afghanistan, (fiction) books by author Khaled Hosseini http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Khaled_Hosseini offer a very good read. His notable books are The Kite Runner, A Thousand Splendid Suns and more recently And The Mountains Echoed.

The Kite Runner movie does not do the book justice. The book is so much better.
