Why We Need National Service.
I've read countless articles written by males,
Be it from Full-time National Service (NSF) men, NSmen or regulars.
Recently, I've also had the privilege to hear from females on their perspectives of National Service.
So, this evening, I wish to devote a post,
That puts forward my perspectives on this issue too.
Yes, I may be a regular in the force,
But really, I'm no different from anyone who has a job.
Fact is, I too have my ups and downs working to serve the nation too.
I will not be bias just because I am currently serving,
But rather I write because I believe in my purpose.
So allow me to put forward:
Why We Need National Service.
1) You Cannot Train A Soldier To Protect Your Country In One Day.
War or not, no country can train their soldiers to be combat ready in the blink of an eye. Sure, you can teach a soldier how to fire a weapon in a day, but so what if he can't even hit the target he intends to shoot? We have learnt very hard lessons from the Japanese Occupation, which is why today, we make the conscious effort to build our own defence force without relying on others. The peace we have today is not one that is granted out of nothing. We must remember that, the best way to defend our country, is to always ensure that our people are always ready, whether or not there is a need for it. Not start training, when the need arises. Because, by then, it will be too late.
2) Its All About Peace, Not Recognition.
Soldiers work in the most unapparent manner to bring the most apparent outcomes to Singapore, Peace. So a lot of times, because of how unapparent our efforts are, we get misunderstood. People start thinking that National Service is redundant because its been years since the war last broke out, and its easy to assume in that case that, it never will. But the truth is, they don't know what these silent warriors have done behind the scenes to ensure that war indeed doesn't break out. Everyday, as our politicians work hard to build relations through engagements with fellow politicians all over the world, our soldiers are busy training up with the latest weaponry and equipments, to leverage our military proficiency to send a message of deterrence to others. To tell the world that, yes our country maybe small, and that we maybe a peace loving nation. But if our peace is threatened, we are more than capable to stand up and defend ourselves.
3) To Turn Boys Into Men.
Most people dread National Service, because its a time in their lives, when they are somewhat 'forced' into doing things against their wishes. And ironically, that's exactly what makes them better. For doing something against their will, makes them appreciate what they have more. I have seen soldiers who came in despising the system, but left appreciating the tough moments National Service gave them. For there will be no point in your life where you get forced to: have camouflage cream painted on your face; forced to sleep out at the field under the heavy rain; and forced to eat combat rations for as many days you are out at the field. These are life experiences, that turn boys into men. We bring our boys into National Service for two years, to convert them into men, to equip them with the ability to protect not only their loved ones, but the country when the need arises. And lets not forget how National Service also allow these men-to-be, an opportunity to forge friendships and camaraderie that last a lifetime.
