Thinking of taking a short trip to Malaysia over CNY. Given that the both causeway will likely be jammed, when will be the best date/time to travel across the causeway?

In the wee hours of the morning

Yes, that's my thought too.

Alternatively thinking of going in on 31 Jan (Actual New Year Day) 1pm - that's when most of the people who wanted to cross over would have done so.

Don't you think the actual rush is the eve?

Yes, the rush to cross over will take place on the eve or the day earlier

Many shops will not be open, roads will be jammed and congestion expected from both ends of the customs. Why take risk to having such inconveniences when you know its going to be there waiting for you.

CNY eve whole day till midnight will be very jam, worker rushing home, load and load of buses heading up north. Those with family here and kampong in Malaysia will also rush in after reunion dinner.

1st day of CNY may not be jam at custom, but NSHW sure jam as people travel interstate for visiting or go back home town.

20 years ago if you visit malacca, you will see dead town, no food no entertainment no shopping. but the kampongs are busy and people playing firecracker.

Now you go in on 1st day, everything as per normal and flooded with cars from Singapore and KL.

KL to Ipoh will likely be jammed -

Would allow 3 - 4 hours for this portion of the journey. JB to KL probably still ok though.

Yep - 2-3 am will be the best time to cross customs, assuming you reach JB by 4 am, you will be reaching KL around 7-8 am, you may have jam in Serembam at this timing, then you can turn off, but once get past the split (one side back to KL, the other to Ipoh) it will most likely be jammed.

Do take note - if you've never done it before, driving the NSHW in the dark can be challenging - IMHO the best strategy to follow is to follow someone else's tail lights - you most likely won't be able to see the road, just know where it goes by where the cars in front go.

Moreover there will always be higher accident fatality rates during this season
