JAKARTA: Seven Japanese tourists were missing after leaving for a scuba diving trip in waters off the Indonesian island of Bali, police said Saturday.

The group disappeared after heading out on a speedboat to Nusa Lembongan, a small island off the southeast coast of the popular resort isle, Bali police spokesman Hariadi told AFP.

"Seven Japanese tourists went missing after a diving activity in the area on Friday," he said.

"We have sent out rescue boats and a helicopter this morning to comb the beaches and surrounding areas to look for them as well as their speedboat. So far, we have found nothing," he added.

It is not yet clear if the group got into trouble once they entered the water, or if they were on the boat.

"Our priority is to find them first. We don't know if they had experienced engine trouble, strong currents or bad weather conditions," Hariadi said.

Yasue Katsunobu, the deputy consul general of Japan in Denpasar, confirmed that the missing were Japanese and he was "awaiting results of the search".

Nusa Lembongan is a popular scuba diving spot is part of Coral Triangle, widely considered the world's richest underwater wilderness.

It across six nations between the Indian and Pacific oceans -- Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, East Timor, Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands.

Diving is a safe sport unless one bo hil all the safety precautions like alcohol-control, sudden ascent w/o safety stops, monkeying in the waters, etc..

That said, competency of the divemaster/operator, functionality of the dive equipment, underwater currents, weather in general, etc are something beyond one's control.

Heard found one body, hope the other six Ok...

Apparently not.

All seven still missing according to the Guardian: http://www.theguardian.com/world/2014/feb/16/seven-japanese-women-divers-still-missing-bali

You heard of one or two divers going missing in some news but it was almost never heard of that you have the entire dive group gone missing machiam the 5 US Navy planes over the Bermuda Triangle.

The only reason I can think of was that a very strong undercurrent swept the entire group under and pinned them down and drowning everyone of them.

Hope I am wrong and they are actually stranded on the surface somewhere.

But bro.. all 7 missing at same time, and experienced divers at that? Something smells not right... could the speedboat gone off course ?

My last post exactly.

It is unfathomable that seven, including two instructors, went missing at one go.

One other possibility besides drowning could be they were kidnapped by pirates but since the dive boat operator was around so unlikely though.

Not all of those points are beyond your control but it is a question of individual risk-management.

The BCDs of these four might have been inflated to keep them floating until rescue.

Hope the fate of other three is also similar and they are stranded on the surface somewhere further...

Yes, hope the three will be rescued soon.

The ordeal of the seven can be made into a movie.

FYI the movie "Open Water" was based on a tragically true story of Tom & Eileen Lonergan:

Tom and Eileen Lonergan

Thomas Joseph Lonergan and Eileen Cassidy (née Hains) Lonergan, born 1964 and 1969, respectively, were a married couple from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, United States, who were mistakenly stranded in the Coral Sea on January 25, 1998, while scuba diving with a group of divers off Australia's Great Barrier Reef. The boat that had transported the group to the dive site departed from the location before the Lonergans returned from their dive, with none of the vessel's crew or passengers noticing that the two had not come back aboard. The couple was never found and they are presumed to have died at sea.[1] At the time of the incident, the Lonergans had recently completed a three-year tour of duty with the Peace Corps on the island of Tuvalu in the Pacific Ocean and were repeating that work on Fiji.[2]

Aftermath[edit]

It was not until two days later, on January 27, 1998, that the pair was discovered to be missing after a bag containing their belongings was found on board the dive boat. A massive air and sea search took place over the following three days. Although some of their diving gear was found washed up later on a beach miles away from where they were lost, indicating that they drowned, their bodies were never found. Fishermen found a diver's slate (a device used for communicating underwater) and wrote down what it reportedly read: "[Mo]nday Jan 26; 1998 08am. To anyone [who] can help us: We have been abandoned on A[gin]court Reef by MV Outer Edge 25 Jan 98 3pm. Please help us [come] to rescue us before we die. Help!!!"[2]

Hope the above will not happen to the three remaining missing divers... [sweatdrop][sweatdrop]
