Hey guys,

 

So after many years of abuse (more like the last 2 once my 3-year old twins started crawling), I'm thinking of selling my 12 year old Infinity Alpha speakers which I use as my 5.1. Also my big beef is my current amp - Denon AVR 1910 - which is very flakey when switching inputs.

 

And staying in a smallish flat now and not waiting to piss off my new neighbours, I'm thinking of going with a smaller 5.1 setup. Not like Bose small... more like bookshelves.

 

Looking at a few bookshelf speakers for front and surrounds from Wharfedale and Boston Acoustice. Also checked out some Yamaha but they sound tinny after the full warm sound of my old towers.

 

Any other recommendations for bookshelves with an AVR with at least 4 HDMI inputs? Budget about 2k.

Am using Bowers and Wilkins sound bar now and quite pleased with the output; or maybe my expectation not so high....anyway.

Alternatively can look at Sonos that come with sound bar and book shelve speakers, best of all with an additional bridge you can play music wireless. [wave]

I am a big fan of Wharfedale 9.0s but if you want a bit more sound then get the 9.1s or 10.1s.

 

I couldn't speak more highly of the little diamonds cos thats what exactly what they are,

As an example,

Yamaha RX-V375 with Q Acoustics 2000I 5.1 pack or a LG NB4530A soundbar seems like the best bang for your buck.

But you'd probably want to listen to those units yourself and make your own decision. Adelphi is a great place to start.

I've heard a few sound bars and also the Sonos. I like how you can start with the sound bar and then invest later on the surrounds and SW for an added punch. But I feel they let you down for stereo. Obviously cos they're more a home theatre package. So I've discounted sound bars from my setup.

 

Reason why I like 5.1 is because the fronts can be great for plain stereo as well. I'm thinking bookshelves now cos after having heard a few of them recently, I think with the current volumes I listen to, they will just as good as my old towers for stereo.

Exactly, the Diamond 10.2s is what convinced me that I can manage with the bookshelves. But there's also the newer Diamond 100 series to consider.

 

For the older 10 package - two 10.2s for front, one centre 10 cc, two 10.1s for surround and an 8" sub - best price I'm getting is about 1,300 SGD. If I swap the two fronts with the larger 10.6 towers, it'll be an additional 600$

 

For the newer Diamond 100 series - similar small bookshelf and sub package is 1,700$

 

Alternatively, I can get the Boston Acoustice A25 tower and surround package for 1,400$

 

Add another 600$ for a slim Marantz.

Yep, couple of good places in Sim Lim also. of course the number of stores in Adelphi is a lot more. I'm just more used to going to two stores in Sim Lim from when I used to trade in AV gear so I get decent prices.

You're right. I did have a look and read the reviews in both the links before as well. But sometimes, the availability of those speakers here in SG is a question :(

You're right... the speakers are a little worse for wear cos my twins have been busy poking the tweeter dust caps and digging the cones. Can't be angry with them...

 

I've taken them apart now to service some of the drivers. The Denon 1910 (award winning amp it may be) frankly sucks now. Found a buyer who will take it from me at 250$. The newer Marantz is about 600$.

I would recommend that you look at Monitor Audio instead of Wharfies. The bronze series should be within your range? I find that MA is well suited for HT.

 

Personally I prefer Dynaudio and their new Excite range are 8ohms throughout, so should be driveable by a regular AVR, but pricing may be a little steep.

The Monitor BX2 right. The BRs seem a bit tinny. But I like the BX series. Bit pricey for me at this time :(

yah, can change the LCR first then surrounds at a later time.

 

MA are not really warm, but I find that they are well suited for HT providing very good clarity and seperation.

 

Or look at Ushers? The 520 + 525 combo has been around for years and do still sound pretty decent. They should be in the same price range as wharfies.

currently using intergrated AVR YHT-S401 with soundbar from yamaha.

intend to use the soundbar as center speaker, put in 2 of my NAD speakers for LR and looking for 2 surrounds at the back.

All of u so atas. I only use Def Technology speaker with Marantz AV Receiver.

 

I don't have the rear speaker to form 5.1 surround.

I am on Def Tech Pro Cinema 800 book shelf speakers for front Left/Right & Centre + Sub.

 

As my hall is very shallow (wall to wall 2m long), it is good enough for me even when it is running on stereo.

Have u heard of Jamo s35? I am on that mate with yamaha vx-675. Should give a listen...
