MH370: No debris, only shipping containers in underwater hunt so far, says Australia

PUBLISHED: MARCH 3, 2015 02:08 PM

SYDNEY, March 3 — The intensive underwater hunt for missing plane MH370 has so far turned up just a few shipping containers — and no sign of the jet, the head of the Australian agency leading the search said today.

The plane vanished a year ago Sunday carrying 239 people en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing and is believed to have gone down in one of the deepest and most remote areas of ocean far off the Western Australia coast.

Chief commissioner of the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) Martin Dolan said that while several manmade items — mostly shipping containers — have been detected during a sonar search, they had found nothing resembling debris from the Malaysia Airlines jet.

Australian and Malaysian authorities have narrowed the search area to a vast 60,000 square kilometre zone — and they have so far scoured around 40 per cent of it, Dolan said.

The ATSB expects the priority area search to be completed in May, but Dolan said it was too soon to say if the hunt could extend beyond then when weather conditions in the remote region worsen.

“The decision about what’s next, which is hypothetical at this stage, is one for governments,” Dolan told AFP.

“From our point of view... we’ve only searched 40 per cent of it, and our focus is on searching the rest of that area and we expect to find the aircraft there. We just can’t guarantee it will happen.”

The commissioner said search officials have categorised objects they found into three levels — with level one classed as items that have “at least some characteristics of an aircraft debris field”.

So far the search has turned up eight “level twos” and more that 100 “level threes”, he said.

“The sorts of things we’re tending to pick up are shipping containers,” Dolan said, which are defined as level twos, while level threes are usually geological features.

Three of the four search vessels — Fugro Equator, Fugro Discovery and GO Phoenix — are using sophisticated sonar systems to scan the complex terrain that plunges to depths of 4,000 metres.

The Fugro Supporter, which joined the search earlier this year, has an autonomous underwater vehicle that moves over the ocean floor more slowly.

The search is jointly funded by Australia and Malaysia, with some AUD$120 million (RM325 million) pledged so far. — AFP

I watched the clip.

Why so much resistance to implement data streaming from the plane?

So that future missions like MH370 can still be pulled off successfully?

Knn. If some airlines implement this, I won't fly those that do choose not to.

I think those pilots say if the data streaming unit is on fire, they can't shut it down.

Pilots are control freaks.

The plane suffered a total disintegration and break into small pieces, that's why it cannot be found. Simple theory.

Just goes to show that there is not a single person who. Anows where the plane is.

Call me a conspiracy theorist but I believe someone knows. It seems impossible that not a.single civilian or military radar have the final path of the aircraft on their screens.

When the truth is finally revealed, however long TT is, usually we will realise that someone knew but was hiding. A simple thing is some radar have ranges that they prefer to keep secret and revealing the planewas on their screens might open an uunnecessary security issue so they are keeping mum in interest of national security.

Does anyone seriously believe that none of SEA military radar captured the plane on their screens after it turned back and flew across Malaysia?

What about the us radar and the Maldivian military radar? Absolutely nothing?

I might have missed out but I believe no one ever said openly that nothing appeared on their military radars. There is silence.

When the search was in the wrong area and everyone is lost, suddenly immarset came in and revealed more info.

All this leads me to think that some info not known to us is in the military radars somewhere but not revealed. It does not mean that someone knows the crash site. It only means that there is more info out there but hidden from the public.

The Russians and US will know something since they have the most number of satellites orbiting the earth. But I think they will deny that their spy satellites know where the plane is.

Yup. I also think someone(country) out there know where the est. crash site is.

1) There are earthquake monitoring sensors all ard the oceans to detect seismic activity. They never tot of using this info?

2) US subs are patrolling the various oceans 24/7, their sonar are the best in the world. They never heard crash noise?

3) The oceans are laid with movement detection devices by US to monitor other countries subs. They didnt hear anything?

Sharing the above info might expose someone's(country) intel capabilities. So better to stay silent. [lipsrsealed]
