XHNews twitter reported the plane's signal is detected 120NM off the southern coast of Vietnam.

That means emergency landing on water.. Hope the plane did not break up on pieces on impact, so the passengers have a chance for survival

UPDATE [11:32am]: VN Express, Vietnam's largest news site, reports that Vietnam Emergency Rescue Center just announced it has found signal of the missing plane at 9.50am 120 miles South West of Ca Mau cape, the Southern-most point of Vietnam.

The signal is believed to be the ELT (Emergency Locator Transmittor) , which can be activated manually by the flight crew or automatically upon impact.

wa lau ... really conflicting news man. Must be so traumatising for the families

HANOI (Reuters) - No signal had been picked up from a Malaysia Airlines Boeing B777-200 aircraft flight carrying 239 passengers and crew from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing, a Vietnamese rescue official said on Saturday.

"We have been seeking but no signal from the plane yet," Pham Hien, director of a Vietnam maritime search and rescue coordination center in Vung Tau, told Reuters by telephone.

Vietnamese and Chinese media had reported that a signal from the plane had been picked up. The reports did not identify what kind of signal.

"The information on local media about the signal near the Cape Ca Mau was inaccurate," Pham said.

I know but if land might have explosion. If water no explosion but the crash will be hard as well.

Cos i u land in the jungles hitting the trees, i think impact will be harder.

Thats what i think la

in Hollywood movies, crash land in jungle will always guarantee survival for the hero & his charbo, while the rest will perish

Lol but in case of crash, which one is easier to save? Jungle or sea?

If we talking about an aircraft falling out of the sky with no control from several thousand feet. No diff.

Only diff is sea harder to find the complete wreckage and black box.

Oh thought they always top up full or at least up to 3/4. Since this is B777-200, the if top up full should be able to fly for 10+ hours. Bit then the risk of explosion will be bigger

Oh i see

Next time i go petrol station top up half only lol

Not much difference in weight for cars 60 litres of fuel should be around 43 kg, half tank around 22kg. Which could be only less than 2% of of total laden weight.

For Airliners, weight of fuel could be up to 30-40% to aircraft max taxy weight. And could weighs more than passengers + luggage or payload combined.

So difference in 1/2 tank in airliners have great impact on fuel economy.
