NETIZENS SLAM SAFRA OVER 'SEXIST' POSTER ADVERTISING GYM MEMBERSHIP
SAFRA has come under fire over an advertisement that has been displayed at several bus stops around Singapore that some have called 'sexist'.

The ad, pictured above, shows a gym scenario where two young men working out are checking out a girl who is standing in the foreground.

It is accompanied by the caption "A great workout, good friends and some healthy distractions.”

It is an ad about SAFRA membership.

One concerned Singaporean who saw the ad, took a photo of it and posted it to the SAFRA facebook page to voice her concern about the poster:

SAFRA releases new gym ad targeting men, undoes sexism of previous ad

Posted on 11 March 2014

New ad tries to be politically correct, shows a man of minority race working out instead of a Chinese woman.

After receiving death threats and some complaints from some quarters regarding its previous gym advertisement that portrayed two men mentally raping a woman, SAFRA has come up with a new ad.

The new gym ad aims to undo the damage done by the previous ad that objectified the woman as a piece of meat.

For the new ad, a male model of minority race was chosen as it is more politically correct than using a Chinese woman as a model.

A SAFRA spokesman, Tong Xing Lian, said: “This ad is appropriate because we managed to get rid of the sexism of men ogling at a woman. Now it shows men ogling at a man, because SAFRA is a man’s organisation.”

“In NS, everybody is a man and it is all about men. Men shower with men, men sleep with men and men are taught how to die for other men.”

“This is the SAFRA spirit.”

At press time, SAFRA said they have received a call from one Lawrence Khong of FCBC.

Give SAFRA a Break

Are we getting too sensitive these days?

I read with amusement, the saga over an alleged sexist ad which SAFRA has been running at several bus stops around Singapore. The ad shows a gym scenario where two young men working out are checking out a girl who is standing in the foreground. It is accompanied by the caption “A great workout, good friends and some healthy distractions.”

Sexist?

Maybe a little, but it is really borderline if you see the ad in it’s tongue-in-cheek context.

Imagine my surprise when I read in the news today that AWARE has joined in the witch hunt (pun not intended) to criticised SAFRA strongly on this. The women’s rights organisation posted an open letter on its website yesterday, saying that SAFRA’s ad “contributes” to “a culture that ubiquitously encourages everyone to see women as existing to be ‘checked out’…for the pleasure of heterosexual men, regardless of how we feel about it”.

Er…. relax can?

Take a look at this alternative version I created with two females checking out a hunk, with the same caption:

Okay right?

I can laugh to both versions. Can you?

Cut SAFRA some slack.

To their credit, SAFRA has so far stood their ground that the ad is not to be taken too seriously and I hope they continue to do so. Stand firm if you believe if you did nothing wrong.

Actually I'm surprised their PR or comms department could allow such an ad to be released. I mean, sure, we're not all that sensitive, but this is really something sooo basic...

At the least, they could've produced and released TWO versions of the ad (such as your examples there), and that would've been way better! (Then maybe also need a 3rd and 4th version for those with LGBT tendencies... [dizzy]:D )

Both ad also weird and funny. First one is sexist and the second one so gay! [:p] Why dont they just make it simple?!

We live in a world where everyone is looking for any little excuse to be offended.

Edited to include video of my opinion:
