By the way, do I need to let the car rental company know that I will be driving into france and some part of my route will cross into Austria?

Driving across these borders are seamless right?

they said austria cannot use dashcam, means if i am using a dashcam in germany, i have to remove it before crossing into Austria right? and no problem for France, I guess.

And also if given these 4 choice for the same price, which one will you choose?

VW Polo, Golf, Mini-3 Turer, & Opel Astra

I think is better to check with your rental company.

As for the car choice, I will pick the Golf. If it has a diesel model will be better.

For such long distance drive, a bigger car is always better and more comfortable.

I booked the Merz Klasse A and was given Audi A4, feel short changed

Sixt only have premium class for auto car car, the 5 days rental cost S$535, include $0 excess CDW I think ok la, the normal golf cost about S$100 lesser. I have been monitoring the price for two weeks.. when I first book it cos S$616 then until the night before collect, it drop till S$535, then I quickly cancel n rebook.. cos I booked “pay later” can cancel anytime

At the Autobahn, what’s the meaning when got a speed limit sign with “bei nasser”? I slow down but all cars behind me still zooming past me?

I’m now in Triberg... a beautiful small town in the heart of black forest ... the drive here was windy hilly small road and covered with snow, but of course the road have been cleared. Moving on to Strasbourg France later.. my very first solo road trip here, very excited and nervous at the same time.

The 'Bei nasser' sign warned of Wet Surface. You did right by slowing down because don't know the condition of tyres in rented cars. Although treads may be good sill, the rubber could have hardened.

Audi A4 should be a higher class than A class, why feel short change. It is a much bigger car.

Do you have the photo of the sign you mention?

No one been to Monaco before?

Sir, what do you want to know?

It's been a few years, but what I recall was another European city.. the beach is where the action is, and that's more Nice than Monaco.

The casino, well, there's MBS and it looks much better. I will consider only if it's part of a bigger Euro adventure..

Ops I didn’t know... no wonder it’s damn stable .... haha

I didn’t manage to take photo... too dangerous la

Just that thought it’s suppose to be speed limit at 80 with the word attached there but all car zoom passed me... and it’s not raining... does that means the speed limit only applies when it’s raining?

Nice photos.

Then compare to Orchard Road. ha ha.

From 5 of the Christmas market, I find Stuttgart stands out among the rest, wide area with lots of variety .

I'll be planning a 2+ weeks European road trip to Italy sometime in march next year.

Have done some research and realized most car rental companies offered cars in manual and there are various 'car free zones' in the area to look out for or you'll be fined heavily. I've done road trips overseas many times but this is my first European road trip, any tips for Italy? Any inputs would be greatly appreciated. :)

We were in Tuscany for three weeks in June this year.

Didn't have problems hiring auto and never saw any car free zones except when have to park outside small city or town but no problem walking there.  Really wasn't a problem as good parking always available and the demarcation is obvious.

Autostrada can have a limit of 90kph so be careful.

Smaller roads have speed cams in strange places.

Wow, 3 weeks in Tuscany. I am thinking of doing Cinque Terre, which is up north, if you have done it before, please share, heard it is beautiful and one of the must do hikes for those keen to drink, eat and walk. lol..

Wow, 3 weeks in Tuscany. I am thinking of doing Cinque Terre, which is up north, if you have done it before, please share, heard it is beautiful and one of the must do hikes for those keen to drink, eat and walk. lol..

We stayed in Pisa, Florence, Bolognia , La Spezia and Tavernelle near Sienna.

Actually it was 26 days.

For Cinque Terra, pronounce Chinkwee terra if you didn't know, we stayed in La Spezia and took the train from there. Can also go by sea (ferry ) but cannot drive. IIRC we were able to see 4 of the 5 villages in one day moving from one to the next by train.  Glad my missus said she didn't want to miss this part.

Pisa was great but two nights is ok even if you spend one day in Lucca which we liked.

Florence of course can't be missed, very impressive.

We could have missed out on Bolognia although it is supposed to be the food capital of Italy we found the food disappointing.

The missus also wanted to stay in Tavernelle and we hired a car for 7 days for this part.  Tavernelle was central for a lot of great places - Sienna, San Gimignano, Certaldo, Volterra all of which were easy drives by car.

Steak Fiorentina was fabulous, ate it four times.  I mentioned it on the beef thread here.

Book the Uffizi gallery on the internet, shouldn't miss it even if you aren't artistically inclined and the Pitti Palace also in Florence is free with just a 20 minute queue on a Sunday I think.

We only had the car for the final week and getting about the rest of the time was quick, easy, clean and cheap using the two rail companies in Italy.  When staying in any of the cities or towns it was easy walking to everything.
