SUV don't have enough boot space.

In term of comfort, there is no diff btw estate and SUV.

A lot of European city/town has very narrow roads.  With huge SUV, are you sure you can navigate it?

Thanks for your advice bro. Estate car  is more economical too..

Hi,

We am planning family road trip from Netherlands to Germany and Switzerland during this June holiday. In Germany we will be staying at our friend place (near Munich). We will rent SUV from Amsterdam  to Munich and Zurich then back to Amsterdam. Everyone care, share and advice will be appreciated.

I think it's better to rent from Germany as cars registered in Germany already have environmental stickers on the windscreen. German cities have environmental zones specifying which cars (colour of stickers) can enter. If u rent from Netherlands, I don't think they have the sticker on it and you risk getting fined if caught in an environmental zone without a sticker. Also, renting in Germany is cheaper for Hertz the last time I tried booking from different countries online.

Take note of the countries u are allowed to drive into in the rental terms. Often they state if the car breaks down in a country you are allowed to drive in but needs to be towed back to the country of rental, renter has to pay for the repatriation cost from the foreign country to country of rental.

Get a 3 or 5 series estate diesel! Hertz has many of these and they are almost brand new. Once a rented a 3 series estate and the odo was only like 500km? LOL. It still had the new car smell.

Hi Ldlian987,

Noted your advice with many thanks. We will need to visit small town (about two hours drive) in Netherlands near Germany border. Hence we plan to rent car form Amsterdam. Anyway I will look out for this environmental requirement..

Fully agreed.

Estate handle like a saloon. More stable at high speed compare to SUV.

I went on a road trip to Germany, Austria and Switzerland last December and thought I would share some photos with you guys. I booked a full size manual (3 series or similar) with Hertz but when I went to collect the car it was an Opel Insignia Stationwagen diesel instead. To be fair to Hertz during the booking process I specified I wanted a diesel as I would be travelling long distances and diesel is cheaper.

When I went to collect the car in Germany they said that there were no more diesels available except the Insignia (wonder if it's true?). I was anticipating to drive the 3 series or maybe the C class so I was slightly disappointed. But at least I got a diesel and they gave me a stationwagen (not like I needed the extra space anyway) to make up for the different group of car. Nonetheless the Insignia was a good car to drive and was rather stable at 200kph on the autobahn although it was slightly noisy at that speed. It had gd fuel consumption, however there was an issue with the car that I will explain later.

Here are some photos for you guys...

Supercharged

Southern Spain in december can be cold and dull.

But when we were in Nerja for Christmas maybe 10 years ago it was warm and sunny and we never had chance to use the wood burning stove in the living room..BBQ ing rabbit instead of turkey outside on Christmas day was great.

BTW they drive on the right of the road. [lipsrsealed]
