It proffers of an alternative to run-the-gamut mainstream with a no-holds-barred altitude and drivel perspective. Fast action drivers will love the quickie read. So, seat back. Pop the soda. Chill. Enjoy the ride.Driven on 2 March 2014What is it?In '11 Nissan introduced 4-dr Almera as replacement for S'pore's ageing Latio sedan but left the unfortunate 5-door to soldier on till '13.UnderpinningThai-made B-segment Almera rides on Nissan-Renault's "V" platform which underpinned models in the alliance such as '10 Micra and '12 Clio.Ride & HandlingRoly-poly through bends and corners. Supple shocks and good chairs make for cushy ride. Steering is nicely weighted but a tad blunt.NVHDoes like it says on the tin: old school subcompact refinement from 10 years back. Fairly quiet about town but still rough around the edges.PowertrainAlmera low-tech mill is coarse and cheap at higher revs. Lack of instant grunt in lower rev bands. 4-speeder auto 'box is prehistoric stuff.CabinDash: Hard and grainy plastics abound. I've seen better & padded dash on the Latio. Doors that shut like a tin lid of a Milo can is criminal.Controls: As the base variant don't expect all-singing-and-dancing stuff. Control stalks are well-oiled. Aircon is wintery but lacks digital readout.Space: High beltlines make looking down on curbs impossible. Rear leg and knee room rival new Lexus ES sedan's. Shoulder room limited at the back.DesignEven frogs are perched, it's cooler to travel on public buses and trains than to sit inside a green house.
