What do you think should happen to the guy?

In an official email, sent to all staff, speaking as the CEO of Science Centre he said...

“One of them is simply about the complex nature of women which challenges them with communication barriers in even understanding their own gender well, let alone having to compete or co-labour with the men at work.”

That wasn't the only foolish / stupid / off colour remark in the email....you can read the full text at TOC

Generally speaking - I am pretty forgiving of what people say in their personal capacity.

In a case like this however - given his senority, the nature of the business and the business owner - I think he should be fired.

Not only is he creating, what I think is a "hostile work environment" - but his views are obviously sexist and the views are, in my opinion ""incompatible with the values and standards expected of employees" of an institution like Singapore Science Centre.

So what say you?

Well that degenerated fast ----

I am curious as to what MOE will have to say on the matter....after all, Science Centre is owned by MOE - they can't really have people running around spouting nonsense like this can they?

I don't think that's her point -

It seems that she's trying to make that point that as a society it cannot / should not be that only 8% of boardmembers are women, with such a figure there is something wrong with one (or all) of the following

a) Selection Criteria

b) Voting Criteria

c) Development Criteria

And I must say that I would tend to agree with her.

When you have a board that is so far out of "society" numbers - it seems like something is up - I don't believe for one moment that it is anything to do with intelligence / thinking skills - there must be something systemic happening.

I'm very simple minded. So if what he said is untrue and in order to remedy the hostile work environment created as a result of his remarks, it means the opposite is true, which is:

"Women are simple in nature and they understand one another very well, thanks to the total absence of any communication barrier. It follows that they absolutely are able to compete or co-labour with the men at work."

I have no issue with that. I like women (in general and those who are eye candy in particular).

He was just asking why was faith specifically in caps? It seems to me purposely done also highlighting a christian leaning.

2nd last paragraph is a sexism remark.

Faithfully ---- normal signoff

FAITHfully -----???? why all caps on the FAITH? Is it to emphasise his faith? that he has faith? Is it a mistake? Something else?

Sorry ah ---

I work with words - although I might "play play" here a bit and get lazy -

In writing for broad based dissemination for a situation like that, the words chosen - the emphasis used and the construction is very very deliberate and carefully considered.

I would never consider putting all in full caps like that unless it had a purpose.

Is the purpose just to be different?

Or is the purpose something else?

If he had shown himself to be a progressive thinker - I would dismiss it - when I see something like this associated with such conservatism, allusions to a "woman's place" and more - I tend to take a small jump to a not so flattering conclusion.

And to further point out - he has already amply demonstrated how he lets deleterious attitudes towards woman show through in his conduct in the workplace - it is very easy for me to believe that his religious attitudes are also worn on his sleeve in the work place. IF (and only if) such a thing is so - putting the word "FAITH" in full caps this way is more than an affectation....

(note - yeah - there's a lot of assumptions implicit in the above - which is why I would ASK why he has put FAITH this way, rather than straight away humtum him)

Are those emoticons actually in the email?....

Smiley face at the end of reference, from ancient Greek, on how women were imperfections.

Sad face at the end of men becoming lesser gender.

correct me if I am,wrong, but the way you put across, make me,feel that u are saying his sexism remakr is a result of his religious belief.
