MRT not full enough ah? Still want those drivers to squeeze in? Rather than making car ownership pointless, government should look ways and incentives for people to take public transport. Of course should also allocate big budget for public transport

They keep increasing ERP gantries / charges ie make drivers give up driving and take MRT / buses instead, but cant they see the trains/buses simply cant cope as it is now?? Maybe they want these extra passengers to sit on top of the trains/buses, just like what we can see in places like India!!?? [sweatdrop] [sweatdrop]

govt injects $1.1B into bus system to increase capacity. you know how jialat the situation is

and for mrt ... not as easy as bus ... just buy bus and throw tender for operator to run

first need to build tunnel and track ... gotta wait patiently ... no track how to put train on it

It will take some time to catch up with building more tracks and adding more trains etc due to years of neglects. While they are catching up, they should not aggraviate the overcrowding of trains by forcing drivers (thru higher ERP charges etc) to join the crowd. What they are doing is pushing the drivers against the hard rock ---- damned if the drivers continue driving (jams on the roads), also damned if they give up and take the trains (overcrowded trains) [sweatdrop] [sweatdrop]

It wouldn't work here, because we're basically an island and we cannot go elsewhere if it's overcrowded.

Also, our public transport system is neither cheap nor good.

Car ownership in Singapore can also be pointless

- GPS based travel on every car. Each km cost $10

- ERP whole day operation. Per entry $50

- Patrol tax up 3x

- COE at $200k

- Insurance costs 2x

- Road tax up 5x

Surely our million-dollar ministers will be able to think up a solution by increasing cost somewhere -_-

Let us not lose sight that the government has been building new mrt lines that would be ready by 2020. When all lines are ready, giving up cars would be more bearable. Just try to google the master plan for the details.

building more MRT stations won't resolve the crunch in MRT stations during peak hours.

In fact by 2030 with 6.9M, Orchard MRT will be so packed, you will need to Q up to go in the station.

Simple math will tell you that with more people in SG, there will be an increase in human traffic in every MRT station esp at peak periods.

If current station capacity is already overloaded during peak period, will it be better in 2030 ?

The only way is to increase station and train capacity as well.

alternatively, disperse the crowd

now only 1 orchard road ... future got 3-4 orchard road

north south east west all got their anchor shopping recreation f&b etc

that's why govt already planting the seed jurong is the next cbd

just need to move more people and offices there

More station and greater connectivity should ease the crunch a little. ie. People travelling from Punggol to Woodlands won't need to travel to Serangoon (Circle Line) or DG to get to Woodlands, for example.

I don't think they can increase existing station capacity easily (train is easier) as that would mean shutting down the entire line for a year or two, hardly the congestion we can afford at the moment, so they build parallel/criss-cross/looping line to fix the problem.

They didn't plan for 6.9 before but now they are, it is a drug and very soon, we will have the same problem, I really think they should plan based on 8.9 or maybe even 9.9.

car ownership is a big fat cash cow in SG.

Govt won't let it go one la.

how much they are earning from COE and ERP every month?

That's why the solution they come up with each time is to increase price. Simple, effective and save their brain cells.

the art of squeezing is to squeeze at the right amount

no one wants to kill the cow ... milk it everday ... even squeeze until dry liao ... give chance to rebuild ... lol
