SINGAPORE - An 11-year-old boy who was found wandering along Marina Promenade on Monday night is believed to have been dumped here by his Hong Kong father.

Police said in a statement on Saturday that they have established his identity and are working closely with the Hong Kong Police Force, who have detained a 45-year-old man there who is related to him.

"Investigations are ongoing and arrangements will be made to return the boy to his place of origin as soon as possible," the statement added.

Metro Radio Hong Kong reported on its website that the man is the boy's father and had flown from Hong Kong to Singapore, left the boy behind and travelled back alone two days later.

It is always easy for us to be emotional and definitely easier to pass judgement who is right and wrong. But before we do that, we really need to know and understand the entire situation.

Yes, it is wrong to dump a kid, especially your own kid, but it could have been worse if he dumps his kid in China where the syndicate would chop his limps and make him a beggar for their profiteering. I guess, the father is more thoughtful in way.

Taking care of a disable person let alone a disable child for one day or one week may be manageable but to take care for a whole life, it is a life sentence. Not many people have the strength to do it. Hence, why we have abandon children homes and old age homes. This is made worse if we are economically challenged.

In some adoption cases, biological parents do not want to give up child but because they know the child with them cannot have even a chance of survivor and hence they give up. These are very hard and difficult decisions nobody wants to make but they have to make.

It is never and easy thing to do, and the father must have suffered going over and over in his head to do or not to do.

Actually, there are cases like this not only in Hong Kong but I am sure it is happening in may developed countries including Singapore.

In the end, the truth is, no one turns out to be winner, neither the father nor the son. I just feel that if our society value what is important in life above economic gains, we would be much better off.

A very sad day for everybody and we need to reflect on what kind of society we want to have for ourselves and for our children.

The boy is a deaf-mute?

Papers today reported that he did not communicate with anyone so far after he was rescued, and they thought this was because he doesn't trust anyone after being abandoned by his own father.

As they say: If you hear hoof-beats, think horses, not zebras.

that's the problem ... either choose the new born baby or this kid

as you know ... in most cases ... the one who cannot afford normally have more kid than the one who can well afford
