Self driving cars are becoming more and more reliable. With the size, stupid traffic levels, and technology levels of Singapore, would you be willing to own a self driving car under the following conditions...

1. On a model for model comparison there would be no price difference between a self driving car and a "normal car"

2. The computer was 100% reliable in terms of navigation and safety

3. You could give it directions on route as and when needed - and changing / updating route would be easy

4. Maintenance and all other costs (including insurance) would be the same as normal

I would, provided I'm a busy man, needing to do things on the go.

It does kill the joy of driving, but if I can own a self driven car for weekends, why not?

If can on/off the self driving function then I'd on it during traffic jam/congestion. Clear traffic will turn it off and vroom vroom. :D

yes..definitely provided that most if not all drivers use it too as it is dangerous if some errant non-google car drivers blatantly cut into my car's path

This is the attitude that I follow as well...

Would be really cool to be able to do things instead of staring stupidly at red lights for half the morning.

The other question - a self drive car - you could "pre-programme" right? So send it to drop the kids off to school first, before driving itself back to pick you up and take you to work, then drive home again and take your mother shopping before back to the office to pick you up after work.

Wouldn't that be cool?

No,

because I drive for fun in 1st place, then for transport,

if w/o driving fun, I rather go for public transport which is so convenient in Singapore

Put a camera in front - auto snap photo and send it to TP via a wireless connection when it sees people breaking the law!

Plain and simple answer: No. Not in my lifetime.

I like the concept of self-driven cars but I won't want one. Like someone else said, it takes away the joys of driving, which means a lot to me.

A quote from James May:

Self-driven cars are invented ages ago, they're called Taxis.

Look Ma no hands ha ha.

In Spore, got driver no driver no difference. Is the COE for goggle car much more cheaper than conventional vehicle? I doubt so.

Implement on public transport better fixed route and start stop routine. Private ownership forget it.

Would I buy a bicycle that is made by Intel? Either no so answer is no.

Or unless I own a place as big as Michael Jackson's neverland maybe can consider. Rich ppl play toy more like it.

Supercharged

actually, it will really be dependant on the size of the damn car rite?

if it can only fit 2 of me, then, for the luvogawd... no. free also i bo gian.

BUT, if the size is similar to what a normal sedan is, then we can start talking.

I think it should be possible, like setting waypoints on autopilot currently available on planes. [thumbsup]

Yes. Driving to and from work is a chore, especially given the ridiculous speeding enforcement along my route. I'll just switch on auto-drive and relax my mind and body.

If I want to drive for pleasure, I'll take a late night or weekend drive, or go up North. Those are the times my auto-drive will be turned off.

BTW, why would insurance be the same? If the safety record was truly better than with a human driver, the insurance premiums should be lower. Of course, the policy might be worded such that there will be a hefty deductible in case the "black box" has recorded that the auto drive was deactivated at the time of the accident.

A car is more than just a top notch navigational gadget that I have no doubt that this is where Goggle core competancy is but automobile mfg is a different animal.

Not saying cannot be done but takes time for consumers to accept. Selling the technology to a car maker or a JV with them makes more sense

I don't think the insurance would be the same, like you, I would presume it would be lower as the "self drive" would be safer. But I didn't want to have an argument over whether safer, insurance more or less or whatever, so it is just easier to set it in the hypothetical first.
