10w30 or 5w30?

Need some advice from the gurus of MCF.

Thinking of getting EO from amazon, however, undecided whether to get 5w30 or 10w30.

From my limited understanding, it seems that the number before 'w' is not relevant for local climate. In fact, more additive is added to the oil achieve 5 (from 10).

Appreciate any comments/advice on this. Thank you.

looking at valvoline? get the cheaper one if both are of the same series. Not too much difference there.

Tink its 5 need more vi as the base oil thinner...so need more vi for 5....so that can reach 30. 10 base oil thicker so less vi needed to reach 30.

5w30 should give you better FC

Supercharged

5w30 should give you better FC

at normal operating temp, both are w30 so won't make much diff to FC.

but 5w should be less viscous than 10w at start up temp (even though most we get is 20+) so may offer somewhat better protection...

Yes, it is true that 5w-40 vs 10w-40, the 5w-40 is more watery at our ambient temperature. BUT this difference is so marginal that you can ignore it, unless your ambient is cold.

At our type of climate, a 10w-30 is going to be even more watery than 0w-40 in the morning.

On the other hand...if your morning is a cold 0 deg c...then 0w-40 will be more watery than 10w-30 in the morning...

0w-30, 5w-30, 10w-30 not going to be very different for our 30deg c days.

Thanks for all comments.

Think I'll just go ahead and order the 10w30. BTW it's the Pennzoil ultra platinum with free delivery

I've read rave reviews about ultra platinum based on their used oil analysis.

0w30 is still too thick on cold start. If your car reaches operating temperature fast, 10w30 will be fine.

0W-30 is thicker than 10W-30 at cold start temperature?
