While competing with each others, car makers sometimes hold hands and produce models which share things like platform or engine.

Over the past 20 years or so, examples are:-

1 A-Class (1st gen), Mit Colt or same era (very 'loose' sharing during concept design stage, but i read it somewhere these models were linked) <---- can some one verfiy this?

2 Kia and Hyundai, no need to say more (not exactly competitors though)

3 Toyota 2-seater city car (forgot the name), Aston Martin

4 Mit Outlander (previous generation), Peugeot / Citreon MPV

5 BRZ / GT86 (Fuji Heavy Industry - Toyota)

6 ???

now rushing out for lunch appt, continue list later...

If only Italian design and Japanese build the car.

But it's the Japs that design and Italian build it.

The new Mazda MX5 (4th generation) is rumoured to be a kind of technical JV between Mazda and Alfa (or was it Renault Alpine)?

Vauxhall made a Lotus Elise "clone" , forgot it's name, and it came with a turbo engine.

Was supposed to be Mazda/Alfa, but I think Fiat Group (Alfa's owner) changed their minds.

I think some mentioned are at some point bigger car makers owning some stake in smaller car companies. Like at some point of time Ford owned Volvo & Mazda some platform are shared across some models. But after some years Ford sold them off.

Example of other buy overs are

Toyota bought majority stake in Fuji heavy industry which owns Subaru. It's kinda indirect. Other Toyota subsidiary are Daihatsu and Hino.

Chevrolet/Daewoo under GM is also another.

BMW used to own Jag & LandRover but sold off very quickly.

PSA Peugeot Citroen did more collaboration IMO. With Toyota on the small car Aygo, C1 & I forgot what's the Pug's version. And also with Fiat and BMW. With BMW Developing the 1.6L TC engine that's found in the previous versions of MINI. That engine IMO it sucked cos of many engine failures.

Actually looking at the collaboration thingy I think car makers are still very cautious when it comes to sharing tech and know how. I dunno how many car models of such deals turn out to be good but their aim is to reduce cost on R&D to produce mass volume cars to turn a profit. So dun expect too much from such cars.
