Squeaking sound from engine

I noticed a squeaking sound from the engine during the following situations:

1) when engine is just started, and I switch on the aircon

2) when I start to accelerate from a stop

 

I did some research online and I think it's a problem with either the serpentine belt or A/C pulley alignment. What do you guys think? Is this something urgent that needs to be fixed immediately, or can wait until I go for servicing in July? Car has 14 months to go before scrap. By the way the water pump was replaced in 2014.

high pitch so usually is the belt or pulley, try to ask your workshop to check it.

 

my car last time was only at cold start after that no more sound when moving off.. no issues overall for me.

I think it's norm for old car. If the sound bothers you you can rub some soap on the belt or spray some WD40 on the belt. It's just a temp solution to rid the squeaks as the noise will come back.

I'm ok with the noise, but will it lead to more serious problems if not fixed?

wear and tear over time makes parts go beyond their tolerance levels, increasing friction , Bo Pian,that the result of this friction is noise, can be the timing tensioner, and can also be a sign you may need to do a complete timing/fan belt change, and with that change your timing tensioners and water pump as well to prevent further problems at least for another 60k to 100k km drive.

 

Yes WD40 can temporarily stop the squeaking, Power Up product can last longer to prevent the squeaking, but it's best you spend some time in your bonnet to see its severity, and of course, someone else will have to start the car for you , to see where the problem really lies.

Actually I had that problem a couple of months back and thought it was the belt or pulley system that is old. Went for a diagnostics and found out that it was my aircon belt and compressor which is causing the issue.

 

But if possible, just check on your timing belt (rubber belt), as it may also cause these type of sounds. My car runs of the new timing belt which uses metal chains like those on bicycles which is maintenance free.

 

The symptoms are as follows:

1. When you start the engine. The noise level will increase when you switched on the aircon

2. When you move off from a stop.

 

The noise of my car got so bad that when I drove to the mech, he thought my engine was going to explode. Had to do a full replacement of the aircon compressor, aircon belt and cos my alternator is also failing, 5.5 years car, so I just had to replace everything.

Those symptoms you mentioned are referring to aircon belt and compressor, or timing belt? If timing belt, that is quite important as it could destroy the engine if it fails. If it's aircon belt, I don't mind leave it until next servicing in July, then ask mechanic take a look and see if can last until scrap or need to replace.

I wanna leave it till my next servicing but the whole aircon compressor died.

 

You can just leave it till your next servicing but hopefully don't be like mine, the whole aircon broke down.

 

There are a few symptoms for the sound but you need to get it checked out.

 

The mech that diagnosed the problem went through the following:

1. checked the timing belt

> Mine uses timing chain which is so called "maintenance free", therefore did not need replacement and wasn't the cause of the sound.

2. Air Con Belt

3. Air Con Compressor unit

 

These 3 times will cause the sound which you have mentioned. Mine was the more serious one which I have to do a full aircon compressor replacement which includes the aircon belt. Set me back about S$1k.

 

Just have it diagnosed by the professionals and hopefully it is the timing belt. The cheaper option to replace.

1k replacement quite chor considering left 1 year only... will monitor the situation and go for early check if the squeaking gets louder... hopefully it doesn't cause any problems for the next 6 months.

Really don't have so much money but need to repair asap. So my dad thinking of taking a short-term loan from licensed moneylenders.

 

What do you all think? Please give me some advice.

 

Licensed moneylenders? Don't ever go there. They're legal loansharks and the interest is crazy. I know of people who borrowed from them and ended up deeper and deeper in debt, and having trouble even paying the interest.

 

Is that your regular workshop? If it is, and your family has been patronizing them for a long time, can try talking to the person in charge and ask for a discount or some sort of instalment plan. Some of the smaller workshops are quite flexible in this aspect. Otherwise, seek a second opinion. Anyway, $700 doesn't sound like the cost to replace another engine, more like the amount for a basic overhaul.

 

A noisy and vibrating engine might not necessary mean you need a new engine anyway. Very hard to say without actually seeing the car, so suggest you ask for a second or even a third opinion. I know of a couple of workshops which might be able to help, PM me if you want details.

seriously if need to borrow to repair, better sell off and go public.

Might as well sell off and take public transport if you need to borrow such a small sum. It shows that you can't afford to drive. Don't fall into the trap of borrowing money and destroy your whole family. Usually it's 1 person who borrow money but 4 or 5 who suffer...

Oh i see. Maybe the mechanic meant basic overhaul. because my dad's COE only left 1 more year.

 

My dad keep insisting to take a loan from moneylenders. he say he sure can pay back. I tried to find the interest rates online but its quite difficult to find.
