Windows 10 to be free for 1st year

This is all over the internet news. I wonder is if we take the free upgrade within the year, after that 1 year is over, do we have to pay a subcription, just like their Office 365?

Microsoft showed off its latest Windows operating system—Windows 10—today at a media event. (It also revealed 3D “hologram” goggles and anew web browser.)

One of the more surprising Windows 10 features the company announced was its price: zero. Specifically, an upgrade to Windows 10 will be free for 12 months after it launches later this year for people using Windows 7 or Windows 8, its two most recent releases.

Why? Because Microsoft simply needs as many people as possible using Windows 10. This is why:

  • Several of its new features—including apps that run on Windows PCs, smartphones, and Xboxes—will only truly succeed if Windows 10 is widely adopted. Windows 8, its previous version, wasn’t.
  • Software developers—who have focused on Apple’s iOS, Google Android, and the web—stand to get more excited about Windows 10 if it has more users.
  • Meanwhile, Apple—which offers free OS updates for Macs, iPhones, and iPads—has been steadily gaining market share.

Microsoft makes most of its Windows money when people buy new PCs with Windows pre-loaded. So while it will miss out on some sales by making this upgrade free, it won’t be a big change. (Microsoft shares closed down 1% on the day.)

The more Windows users it has, the more Microsoft will also be able to sell other Windows services, including Office 365 subscriptions, Skype premium services, or cloud storage. Executives repeatedly referred to Windows 10 as a “service” today—not just software in a box.

More pressing: The big-picture story is that Microsoft has lost its dominance of the broader computer market as smartphones and tablets—almost entirely powered by Apple and Google software—have taken over the industry.

you must upgrade within 1 year in order to enjoy for free upgrade. Purpose I reckon is to force more people to be on W10 and it will somehow help their Surface and Windows Phone.

After using for 1 year, do we need to pay a subscription to keep it active? Becoz their Offcie 365 has the yearly subscription concept.

Free for 1st year means after that got to pay lor.

If like that, I rather stay with Windows 8.1 .. Pay one time and use for life, or til computer crash.

Bill Gates cannot be #1 if he give things out for free. Somewhere must take back one.

So it's a deferred payment scheme?

There would be payment of some sort. Whether it is subscription based or one-time will have to wait for more news.

Been reading through Windows Central, I reckon it's not subscription based for OS. What it means is, if you're on W7&8 now, you get free upgrade to W10 within 1 year. If you decide to upgrade after 1 year, you must pay.

The motive is to get as many people to jump into W10 in order to entice developers to write apps for W10 which will be "unifying" across all devices. That means developers just need to write one app for W10 desktop, and it will work across all platforms on Windows tablet and Windows Phones. This will also address the so called "apps gap" in WP now.

owe u 5. cant praise you yet.

this. basically, if you upgrade within the first year of windows 10 release, its free all the way. however, if you decide after 1 year from release you'd like to upgrade (basically when the build is more stable), then you have to pay.

its not subscription based from my understanding.

If not subscription base, then maybe worth to upgrade. But wait till nearer to the end for more user feedback.

I reckon if Windows10 becomes subscription base.......MS will truly lose their OS market.

going by this upgrade route.. if my win7 upgrade to W10, and later hardisk crash after 1 year....

unless I make a restore disk (which I will still need to install Win7 and then apply the restore disks),

I will not get W10 free upgrade if I reinstall.

long time no play win pc liao..

Hahaha, I also gave up Windows PC for Mac for many years liao, but I am on Windows Phones for 3 years liao.

I have Lumia 920, 1520 and 535. Hope all can work flawlessly on W10 so that I don't need to buy any more new Lumias for the next 2 years. :D
