With the Chinese wedging themselves into the South China Sea, will we have to consider including her as part of ASEAN?

China is building a runway capable of handling military aircraft in disputed territory in the South China Sea, according to a recent satellite imagereleased Thursday.

The runway on a reef in the Spratly Islands, an archipelago also claimed in part by Vietnam and the Philippines, could stretch to nearly 10,000 feet and expand China’s influence in a region where at least six countries have overlapping claims. U.S. officials have expressed growing concern over China using reefs to build artificial islands and expand its military presence in the area. China has acknowledged that the islands will serve both civilian and military purposes, according to the New York Times.

President Obama said last week that he had concerns of China using “its sheer size and muscle to force countries into subordinate positions.”

“We think this can be solved diplomatically, but just because the Philippines or Vietnam are not as large as China doesn’t mean that they can just be elbowed aside,” added Obama.

America say they will ignore China and sail or fly inside the 12mile South China Sea’s Spratly archipelago.

What do you think China will response? America are currently busy with Russia in Syria at the moment and now want to mess with China?

I think if America sail inside 12 mile of China Spratly island, China will attend to use it’s warship to ram it.

US Pacific fleet & Mediterranean fleet different area of responsibility... they each will handle their own oceans... US Pacific fleet more than able to hold their own against China Navy... if China dare to ram, dun think US warship will sit still for it to do so.. more likely is China Coast Guard ship play b**tard and "accidentally bump" the US warship and then KPKB say its the victim & US war aggressor... same old playbook by China against other ASEAN countries too...

Possibly a CFIT during training. From the images the weather looked like VFR all the way.

CFIT rang a bell....see-fit see fit....

I know I have seen the abbreviation in the one of the posters before in the briefing rooms.

Cannot recall until Googled. [laugh]

It's Controlled Flight Into Terrain.

RIP to the pilot

Well, now it is a matter of proofing IF the Russkies had in deed violated Turkey airspace.

The Turks have previously warned they would not tolerate any foreign incursion and will take necessary action if it happens.

Though highly unlikely but might have a second front if things all gone down south... [sweatdrop]  [sweatdrop]  [sweatdrop]

Even when they were the ottoman empire. they lost so much territory to Russia.

Turks are probably praying for USA to save their backsides now.

Its good to see that our defence minister is being pragmatic about the F-35 purchase:

Its known that our armed forces usually buy equipment that are "battle proven" unless it is to support local arms industry.

The F-35 is hardly off the ground, let alone proven.
