Amazon Kindle

After the Jin Yong thread, I have been wanting to give try to actually read the books. I wanted something as read like a book, easy on the eyes, good contrast. Compare to Samsung tablet, is kindle really better for reading? What's your experience? Would you say a IPS tablet is good enough for reading?

An e-book reader is certainly better and more friendly on the eyes. There's is hardly any glare. Backlight from tablets may make the e-book seem bright and easier to read but it's bad for your eyes.

I have an Amazon Kindle Paperwhite. The size and weight is about that of a paperback novel. I can store hundreds of book in it. Battery life can last about 2 weeks if used for about 1.5 hrs a day. Eyes don't get as tired as when using a tablet. Eye strain is about same as when reading a paper book. The Kindle Paperwhite has no colour; text is black, background is slightly off-white, sort of like paper.

Cheapest place to buy the Paperwhite is at Amazon Japan or Japan authorized agents. However, do not buy the Japan 3G version as Japan 3G doesn't work elsewhere. Also, the Japanese version is able to be used to read Chinese text due to similarity in text alignment. One of the most expensive place to buy Kindle is in Australia.

There are other e-book readers : Sony, Kobo. The Kindle seem to be the most popular, that's all.

The current paperwhite version 2 is very good. Got 4 fonts for chinese as well.

Depends on whether u are reading short or long term. I look at computer screen whole day at work, so i prefer to read something that's not so tiring for leisure.

If you're not a serious reader, of course ipad or tablet will suffice.

Best part of paperwhite is u can read in the dark for hours, it doesn't strain your eyes cos u can adjust the backlight to just nice.

I have a kindle V3. my wife has PW version 1. I have version 2.

All extremely worth the $.

I don't think there's a difference in japanese and USA version.

Just that some e-books are not formatted well.

My wife and I don't have problem with most chinese e-books.

Sony no more. my wife had a sony, text quality much inferior to my old kindleV3.

Kobo is probably the only real alternative.

Cheapest USA kindle paperwhite is 99 usd (but only ship within USA). on promotion. Usual is 119.

Promotion usually during black friday once, then 1 maybe twice randomly during the year.

To ship to SG via CGW with an accompanying cover is about another 20-30 USD.

I'm using one of the older models without the backlight, so cannot read it in the dark.

I love it. Light, fits nicely in my hand and easy to use. Battery lasts for ages, even for a week-long trip I don't need to worry about charging it.

I have both voyage and paperwhite. Both, the battery don't last for 6 weeks as claimed. This is due to the fact that even when you put the backlight to the lowest, you can still see a slight glow in a completely dark room. Otherwise, it's a solid and convenient e-book. Personally, I use it mostly for reading bibles and it's convenient to add notes and bookmarks. As for the other unit, I passe it to my kids. It's easy to buy any books with just one click and at great price.

How's the voyage? worth the considerable extra?

My friend bought one but he doesn't have paperwhite to compare to.

Nope.

Con:

- Considering that I got the paperwhite during the black friday at USD99, it's half the price of voyage.

- Voyage's display contrast is only slightly better. As for the advertised higher ppi, it's rather useless since ebook is not meant for good image display anyway. On paperwhite itself it's already rather crisp.

- The auto-brightness feature is rather useless. I disabled it. Even when it's enabled, there are times that it will not work. You've got to reboot the device to get it working again.

Pro:

- the side pressure zone to flip page. It's a more convenient way to flip page compare to swip, especially if you're reading with one hand.

- Flushed screen, compare to paperwhite.

- Slightly smaller.

- Nicer looking and sleek.

So, unless you don't mind paying double mostly for the aesthetic, I'd say not worth it.

I am using Voyage...nice upgrade from my 3G Kindle. But if you have the paperwhite, then dont bother as not significant.

Haha thanks.

I won't pay so much for an e-book reader anyway.

Paperwhite v2 is good enough!

My wife has v1. There are more fonts for version 2. Also the text looks more crisp slightly.

Found a couple of friendly Epub and PDF format for Jin Yong novel, does Kindle support these two format? This is the primary reason why I'm getting the Kindle.

And the PDF format doesn't work straight off my Adobe reader. I have to download and install some fonts and restart Adobe reader. I wonder does Kindle has the chinese PDF fonts as well?

Kindle can handle PDF file but it is very laggy to read pdf on Kindle

Kindle does not support Epub, but you can always use some free online tool to convert the Epub file into mobi file (which is supported by Kindle).

Jin Yong novels in mobi format for you

EPUB easy to convert to MOBI, but if u search hard enough sure got one lah. Kindle is the worlds most popular ebook reader.

Just use Calibre if u want to convert.

Apologies if the information I posted in an earlier post is not the latest. It was all based on my own personal experience with my Paper white.

I find the experience good and well worth the reasonable price paid.
