Don't need to worry, it is just another highway like AYE or PIE either way reach destination it is a matter of security which is safer to travel. and the type of cargo they carry. From a strategic point, it is minefield if they carry hazardous product as anything can happen within the canal.

Southern Thailand is occupied by the Thai muslim and not forgetting the Malaysia are muslim countries. Who will control, it is still early day, like the chinese provide the funding for the project and at the end of the day the Thai just take over and nationalise it. This is what happen when the early 80s and 90s when foreigner pump money into china to build highway and the next thing- they just take over and pay a small token. like the infrastructure project on housing in Shanghai and the Teinjin highway

Now history will repeat itself- just wait and see. End of the day, the land belong to Thailand- they act blur and everything ok now and later see how.

The bottom line is would shipping company take the risk given the narrow canal and the muslim insurgent they want a piece of cake & action- how to divorce them from the mainland. In fact, it is dead valley with cliff on both side as to corner all the ship. Like the chinese movie Red Cliff.

Now it is $28B??? This shit just get better and better, doesn't it?

Panama Canal and Suez Canal had more reason going for them to be built than Kra.

It is a real pain in the ass to sail round Cape Horn and Cape of Good Hope compared to the Malacca Straits and South China Sea.

Only the shipping lines will be happy as they save on fuel costs. Did they pledge to reduce freight rates in line with fuel savings they enjoy? Heck, even CDG, SBS and SMRT know better.

They wanna visit Thai girls while crossing lah 😂

I had a discussion with an elderly Singaporean who bring customers to Thailand on guided tour once said, it would be impossible for Thailand to go ahead with this plan, as the south always wanted independence, and cutting the southern tip across the Kra Isthmus gives them a legitimate boundary..

For political reasons, I find his argument strong, but seldom would insurgencies last a long time, and the shortcut to instant prosperity, funded by other people's money ( China ) is too strong a lure.

China is a big player in minor country's politics/geographical development because it has the money, and the cunning.

Look at how the Sultan of Johor is convinced to break away from the central government's control with the new chinese backer; Cambodia/ Myanmmar breaking out from ASEAN ranks when standing up to China where the Philippines is involved. Too many similar situations to bring up

Small countries would not do well should they allow the giants to break them from the grouped core.

朝秦暮楚 is apt to describe China's act. They are also employing classic Sun Zi's stratagem

The south wanted to breakaway is because they are under-developed and has always been culturally different. With the canal, that area will be developed, supporting industries will sprung up, the economic conditions for the south will improve a lot, like Singapore in the past centuries, the geographical advantage brought loads traders to seek commodities to sell. It may perhaps help to achieve happiness, prosperity & progress for their nation.

How many ships can the canal accomodates? There are so many ships passing down south every day and if the canal is not efficient many will choose not to use it for that little saving in fuel and time.

last i went pahang there was a wooden arc spanning the road....we were told that was the place where the malay kingdom finally managed to stop the Siamese attack and was the starting point in managing to push back the Siamese to its' present border. Actually we havent even reach Pahang yet...it was like the border between Johor and Pahang!

Hypersonic

Panama canal is 77km long and Kra Canal is going to be about 102km long ; Also the ships cannot speed like the way they do at Straits of Malacca and again ships have to stop at certain intervals (like a bus bay) so that ships can go both ways right in a one lane passage- I think and usd28 billion project is no joke and might take more than 10 years even with todays technology and expertise

both government denied their involvement and its done by private enterprise?

signed by thai former military PM

I smell a big rat there..

strategically CN liked the canal cos this can prevent a blockade by US via SG or PH.

and they think the own the whole south china sea. like some have commented the savings in distance is not very significant if the canal is jammed up by CN ships. and if JP and other Asia pacific countries boycott then, think we still ok la

I think not just the physical location. The political climate, efficiency, ease of doing business, trade barriers, language for business, overall infrastructure, safety of people and threats from piracy etc all make a package for any port as well.

It's a bit like saying that now Xiaomi has all the right ticks for the handphone component and will take over Apple or Samsung. A bit like but not exactly the same also. It's easier to try and switch handphones but its very hard to change a model of business that has been tried and proven.

http://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/business/singapore/psa-s-annual-profit-falls/1711748.html

PSA made 1.4 bil last yr.

In today's standard that's considered moderate. And this trade is getting out-fashioned.

Catching up with modern business world there are other more profitable endeavors out there. We just need to catch up with the times.

Of course if we can still keep a good share of port businesses then that's good.

Do note that about half of what PSA made was outside of Singapore.

"PSA International (PSA) posted 65.44 million TEUs (Twenty-foot Equivalent Units) in 2014, representing an increase of 5.8% from the previous year.

 PSA’s flagship Singapore Terminals contributed 33.55 million TEUs with a growth of 4.1% year-on-year, and PSA terminals outside Singapore delivered a total throughput of 31.89 million TEUs, increasing 7.8% over 2013. "

Yet again, this is hoping for our neighbors to be incompetent and inefficent. What if they suddenly wake up one day like how the sleeping dragon woke up?

Simple explanation. Cheaper to pay a FW than a local.

Makes sense right? The difference in wages could be 50% less or even more.

Take it from Lim Sia Suay. Cheaper Better Faster.

Of course that is not taking into account any issues he might have had at the company la.

rather than blame PAP and FT.

shouldn't he reflect on why he was axed?

if he was doing well and being productive, would the coy get rid of him?

there is always 2 sides to a coin

Actually it was pretty obvious to me that it's money laundering. But Johor Sultan makan how much money from the cheenas, only he will know.

JB now swallowing their own pride & saliva leow.....

A lot of China projects had scaled down or withdrawn due to corruption clamp down by the President of China. The chinese businessmen are laundering $$$$$ by buying up properties or support projects and resold at a profit of which turns into legally earned $$$$$.

Rumours had been spreading for sometimes leow that the condo projects had slowed or scaled down and the investment money are not forthcoming from China businessmen as the clamp down in China take a serious toll on them.

How true the rumours, just wait and see the condo projects which suppose to complete by end 2016 on a man made island. To date as one pass bye 2nd link to JB, still can't see any structures of a buildings.... :slow:
