US daredevil dies in Yosemite jumping accident

https://sg.news.yahoo.com/us-daredevil-potter-dies-jumping-accident-083834489.html

A world-renowned extreme athlete died along with another man during a stunt at the Yosemite National Park in California, US media said Sunday.

Tributes poured in from all over the globe for Dean Potter, 43, following his death on Saturday.

He and fellow BASE jumper Graham Hunt, 29, were killed during a jump at Taft Point, ABC News said, citing Yosemite National Park spokesman Scott Gediman.

Reports filtered through to park officials on Saturday of an accident and a helicopter spotted the two bodies on Sunday.

When Rangers got to them about noon, they were identified as Potter and Hunt, Gediman said.

Other media said the pair had been attempting a wingsuit flight from Taft Point but smashed into a rocky outcrop when they tried to fly through a narrow gap in the mountains.

On Potter's official Facebook page -- where he describes himself as "artist, adventurer, athlete" -- extreme sports enthusiasts from all over the world paid tribute to the man admired for his fearlessness and incredible courage.

His last Facebook post, on May 12, shows a picture of his dog in a mountainous landscape and the caption: "Miss Whisper. Yosemite Dog."

In an interview with The New York Times in 2008, Potter said: "Part of me says it's kind of crazy to think you can fly your human body.

"Another part of me thinks all of us have had the dream that we can fly. Why not chase after it? Maybe it brings you to some other tangent. Chasing after the unattainable is the fun part."

BASE stands for buildings, antennas, spans and Earth that jumpers can parachute from. It is illegal in US national parks.

When he saw he was heading towards the rock, I wonder did he say , "oh yeah, what a glorious way to die" or "oh, shlt!" [laugh]

Live life on the edge is like that one. They took the risk, they lost the gamble.

if not wrong i saw a documentary on Nat Geo featuring him doing a free solo climb. The guy said he was born different...some kind of autism that made him fearless and a risk taker! I watched him climb that mountain and it gave me the goose pimples! RIP...

many years back, when tom cruise was interviewed (launching his MI movie) about his mountain climb stint which was crafted or actually performed inside a studio..... he actually said . . . less he's Potter which he is not . . . it was obvious then Potter was already that famous in the us

i love sleeping!

I'm not convince dying in your sleep is painless. It likely the deceased may suffered a attack, felt the pain or out of breath and died without waking anyone else. And everybody thought he/she passed on peacefully..

They died doing what they loved ....

Pretty sure they have no regrets and they would have anticipated they would end up like that one day ...

They lived for that moment of glory and achieved what others unable to ...

there are 3 i knew of who died in their sleep. One was my uncle who passed on last December. Told his daughter to wake him up for afternoon prayers at around 4:30....daughter later tried waking him up later as he looked like he was sleeping but couldnt wake him up.....he just died peacefully in his sleep not even a yr after his wife died. The other 2 were my friends.....both died below 35.....woke up gasping for air! One had 'cessation of the right ventricular artery'.....and the other i didnt managed to see the death cert!
