Volkswagen scandal

If only car are sold at cost...

Imagine if you are a business owner, will you buy back your defective product at above your selling price (and in Singapore >2 times diff)? I am not taking side (in fact I condemn on VW for the dirty trick), but realistically, get the defect rectified (and meeting all outher specifications), with some "level" of compensation for the lower resale value is a more feasibile way for all.

A follow up from our earlier posts: Looks like VW will be buying back the cars that it cannot fix. There is still the class action litigations and other EU investigations to meet. Good thing they are a profitable company... maybe it'll be time to sell Bentley, Bugatti, Lambo, etc to meet the costs.

Volkswagen likely to buy back 115,000 cars in U.S: German report

German automaker Volkswagen AG (VOWG_p.DE) assumes it will have to buy back about 115,000 cars in the United States as a result of the emissions scandal, a newspaper reported on Thursday.

Without citing its sources, Germany's daily Sueddeutsche Zeitung said the company expected it would have to either refund the purchase price of a fifth of the diesel vehicles affected or offer a new car at a significant discount.

Volkswagen expects that the rest of the vehicles will need major refits, incurring significant costs for parts and a long stay at the garage as parts of the exhaust must be reconstructed and approved, the newspaper reported.

Volkswagen could not be immediately reached for comment.

On Tuesday, VW brand chief Herbert Diess said he was confident the German automaker would reach agreement with U.S regulators to bring nearly 500,000 diesel vehicles into compliance with U.S. emissions laws.

In an interview with Reuters, Diess said fixing older VW cars equipped with 2.0-litre diesel engines would be more difficult than bringing more recent models into compliance.

Some U.S. regulators and lawmakers have said VW may have to buy back older models. Diess did not say whether VW was discussing that, but said he was optimistic an agreement with U.S. regulators would be reached soon.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency said on Wednesday that "recall discussions with the company have not produced an acceptable way forward. EPA continues to insist that VW develops effective, appropriate remedies as expeditiously as possible."

The U.S. Justice Department on Monday sued Volkswagen for up to $48 billion for allegedly violating U.S. environmental laws.

The Sueddeutsche Zeitung also reported that about 50 employees - including several division heads - had come forward as part of an internal amnesty program to help the company clear up the scandal.

Volkswagen has admitted it installed software in certain diesel models sold in the United States, that allowed the cars to pass government emissions tests, but then emit nearly 40 times the allowed levels of pollutants on the road.

Diess said Volkswagen expected the company would be able to repair by the end of 2016 about 8.5 million diesel cars sold in Europe that did not comply with emissions standards.

Mercedes-Benz diesels use cheat device, claims lawsuit

Testing at highway speeds, at low temperatures, and at variable speeds, indicate a systemic failure to meet emissions standards. Low temperature testing at highway speeds for example, produced emissions that were 8.1 to 19.7 times the highway emissions standard. In virtually every road test the emissions were hardly as Mercedes promised as 'the world's cleanest and most advanced diesel...' Mercedes vehicles do not meet emission standards in virtually all real world driving conditions.

The lawsuit adds that testing at low temperatures at variable speeds produced emissions as high as 30.8 times the standard.

Singapore gahmen better not come down too hard on VW. Otherwise, in the wake of the whole Tesla Model S thing, they would look like completely hypocritical twats.

(Not that they're not, but they certainly don't want to look it! :D)

VW (incl Audi & Porsche) > Merc > BMW? [sly]

who don't cheat????? lol

Skarli all diesel cAr mfgr got involved in some form of defeating methodology. Sigh, is mankind setting an unachievable standard for themselves? First dct, then diesel engine for euro v onward.

Or perhaps this defeat device was anorm all this while, just that not picked up during audit?

Or isit implying serious environmental threat where higher emission requirement is needed despite not so readily developed low emission equipment?

Like Toyota, Mercedes Benz is untouchable in Singapore.  [laugh]

I guess that, and maybe a long list of other "untouchable" brands...

I am not bias, but based on historical records, which auto manufacturer has not been caught wrong doing? In my limited memory, there are:

- Mazda & Hyundai with over declaration of power output

- Mitsubishi with some safety issues

- Toyota with runaway cars

- Toyota, Honda & Nissan with airbag & brake issues

- Ford, GM, and many others with drive train to safety issues, etc. etc.

Just that many buyers here are not that well informed. That is why I say must do home work else... [dead] [dead]

US Gov Tasks Mercedes With Internal Emissions Investigation

Daimler has begun conducting an internal investigation regarding its diesel exhaust emissions in the US, at the request of the Department of Justice.

This comes on the heels of a lawsuit filed by US Mercedes owners back in February, in which they claimed that the German automaker's diesel cars didn't respect their own emissions standards.

According to Autonews, the claim states that Mercedes BlueTEC models carried a "defeat device", much like the one that destroyed VW's image in the US as far as their diesel cars were concerned, and that nitrogen oxide emissions were far higher during all road tests than they were during laboratory tests.

Of course, Daimler responded by saying that the lawsuit was "without merit" adding that they'll be "cooperating fully with the authorities."

While it's unclear what started this new investigation, Evercore ISI analyst Arndt Ellinghorst said that it could be related to certein accusations from Europe which state that Mercedes is using auxiliary emission control devices (AECD) in order to improve fuel efficiency on their cars.

In another part of Europe...

Peugeot raided by French emissions investigators

PSA Peugeot Citroen offices have been raided by anti-fraud investigators as part of ongoing investigations on pollutants in the car industry.

The firm said its vehicles are emissions compliant.

However, the UK said real world emissions were higher than lab testing conditions for all manufacturers.

Authorities and car manufacturers have been on the alert in the wake of the Volkswagen emissions scandal, which emerged in late September.

In my experience, no one brand is sacrosanct. Everyone of them have problems. So don't concentrate on the brand. Concentrate on the model. The VW mk5 golf GTi was phenomenal. But their mk6 122tsi onwards was a spiral downhill with problems on many things.

The scandal involving the airbag deaths endured by so many vehicle builders in the JDM... just keep your mind open and keep your options wide. Choose models based on their successful history. Don't stick to one brand. A car is not a wife.

I concur! Just like not every generation of E-Class is as reliable as the W124.

Always take manufacturer's claim (especially during new product launch) with a pinch of salt and wait for early adaptor's feedback before rushing to get the latest model / technology.

Hello.

Kinda need help for a school project. It's on the VW diesel scandal and i'd like to find out if there are any affected VW owners here and how did it affect you and your car and recalls, if any.

Has LTA resumed registration of vehicles? Googled it and so far the news pointed me to the original approval suspension in october until VW has recertified all cars.

Thanks!

Yup thanks, have read through some of these earlier and used the info from there to compile the report.

But hoping to get some personal insight if any from VW owners regarding the scandal and the recall process.
