Something to ponder..

Petter Schiff talked about illegal immigrants in USA and misconceptions people have.

He come to explain some of the misconceptions about illegal immigrants take away American jobs and lower down wages.

Having listened to his explanation, somehow it also applies to Singapore, replace the word illegal immigrants with foreigners and the whole things makes a lot of sense to Singapore context.

People keep complaining foreigners come in Singapore that took away our job and taking down our wages, is that true?

Foreigners come in Singapore that took away our job, debate:

Not so true as there is unlimited amount of work. There is no limit to the numbers of jobs that can be created.

Foreigners come in Singapore that lower down our wages, debate:

Not so true, let's assume because there are foreigners come in, Employer can hire foreigners can do things at a lower price then they would have to pay higher if these foreigners won't here. Let's say we are getting an influx of skilled workers, carpenters, plumbers, tailors, mechanics. Let's say your sink is clogged up and you want to call plumbers. If there's more plumbers here and because there is more plumbers, employer can hire plumbers for less money, cost of hiring plumbers goes down. The debate is less money to hire plumbers, more money to spend someplace else.

Foreigners help bring down the cost of doing business and ultimately bring down prices and that benefits everyone, its a good idea to have more workers in the economy. There are a lot of foreigners that come to Singapore that jobs that Singaporeans won't do. The only way these job (that Singaporeans won't want to do ) gets down is because these foreigners did them and if these foreigners won't here, the jobs won't get done, and a lot of these companies won't exist here anymore and so a lot of higher paying jobs will go away. Because without lower paying job doing the job, higher paying jobs will not be possible.

It is an chicken and egg debate. However, there still need to have foreigners that need to fill up jobs that many Singaporeans do not want to do. Many companies would not have exist if unable to find lower paying workers and likelihood, a lot of higher paying jobs will not be here and many Singaporeans would also suffer.

I think most of the people here in mcf  are concern with the PMET level jobs, not the lower end. We appreciate the hardworking Banglah that built our roads and HDB.

But that's because we are not the ones doing these manual labor jobs.

Would we be able to say the same thing if we were a construction worker? Or a plumber?

Some of the mid level FT I have seen doesn't really add value to the organisation.

Shipped in from parent company with ease, salary definitely more than the stipulated under job bank.

Have good concept but no follow thru.

There are others really good one, so it's individual, not really nationality.

You must be shitting yourself thinking the number of jobs available in the market is unlimited. Where did that conclusion come from? The very basis of your argument is logically flawed so there is no point going into the specifics of your debate.

The number of jobs on the market is always a finite number and that number will tend to drop with advancement in technology. Technology can replace humans. Let me quote a very simple example: Many years ago before the mechanized road cleansing vehicle (think Veolia and the likes) road cleansing is a manual task.

Sure Singaporeans are one fussy sonofabitch whiny bunch that like to pick and choose jobs but going so far to say FTs do not steal jobs from us is a swing to one end of the extreme.

Absolutely right.

What we should be considering is how bringing in FTs can add value to the workers here. If a foreign company wants permission to bring in some of their own managers (like atonchai mentioned) before they will locate their regional HQ here and hire some local workers to complement, then so be it. Doesn't really matter to us

If it's a company hiring FTs just because they are cheaper then cannot la.

It's simple supply and demand.

When you are younger and less skilled without all these foreigners, you look for a job and you might get 10 similarly qualified locals trying for the job.

You get lucky and was selected.

Now, 20 yrs later, you are much older and retrenched.

Now, you go look for a job obviously with higher salary, bcuz you have worked 20 yrs, highly skilled. Now you have to compete with 100 foreigners who have dubious higher education. Do you think you can get that job ?

Employers are looking for "cheap and good". When there are plentiful of foreigners available and everyone willing to take a lot lower pay than you (from where they come from), why choose you ?

Let's not talk about illegal immigrants in the USA.

Let's talk about USA where Peter Schiff comes from purportedly.

How about sending a couple 100 millions Chinese and Indians there to "create" jobs ?

Do you think it will happen ?

Most likely not, USA as it is now, is very difficult for you to go there and work or get a B1, H1 visa.

They protect their own citizens's job, unlike here.

..ah of coz not, Peter is just talking about illegal immigrants doing dirty jobs that Americans shun; and conveniently replaced it with the word foreigners.
