no matter how, COE system can not be abandoned, and cannot increase COE quota anymore, implement OCS soonest,

otherwise Singapore really will become a big carpark, everyone owns a car but cannot drive due to massive jam.  :omg:

I will agree with you that your approach, reduce COE quota will also solve the problem of congestion.  Our goals are the same, just that the path are different.

However, I believe that increasing operation cost of cars is a better choice because it means that everyone still have an option to use their car when public transportation is sub-optimum.  Example, bulky items from Ikea, travel to Malaysia, grocery from outlying suburbs, or the bro that needs to race his RC boats  Your solution eliminates that option altogether for a lot of people.

Also, increasing operational cost solution offers the car industry and ancillaries support services better economic prospects, yours reduces their opportunities.

So, increasing number of COEs but increasing operational cost is offers a more solution that results in better benefits.

Don't miss this important point:

"The roads in the Civic District and CBD are chosen because there are many points of interest along the way such as historic landmarks, and these roads are under-utilised on Sunday mornings."

Do you think they will close popular roads at popular timings? This is Singapore. Pragmatism still rules.

Honestly with the state of public transport as it is, the government won't be touching car ownership for a while. To forcefully reduce car ownership while public transport is facing issues would be suicide. One thing at a time, fix the public transport and ensure it has capacity, before thinking of moving people from private transport to public transport.

Good move. More connectivity for people makes it easier to achieve. But people should really learn to walk a little bit more and complain less on walking distance even if the train station is a little distance away from your destination.

To me, his definiton of car-lite city mean:

Cars are only for the rich and elite, peasants take MRT and buses.

Simple.

CAPISCE?

with this definition, I am counted as the rich and the elite, so are many of you :-)

Agree to the idea of reducing cost of Car Ownership , and increasing Car Operating Cost.

At least people can have a choice to have one when needed to , also gives life to the automotive industry in SG.

To add on , since to make the City Car Lite , also to request to make it Bike Friendly as well , as for those travelling to diff places to have a safe option to commute .

The LTA tagline is "give your car a break". But in our mind our tagline to LTA is "will the train delay/breakdown happen today, tomorrow or ??". Which do we have more faith in? The trains or our cars. Needless to say ppl have more faith in their cars.

To try to entice ppl to move away from their cars may prove challenging unless there are significant changes. I think the plans to implement electric car sharing or even driverless vehicles are not easy to adopt becoz we have the same work/school schedules. Govt can only stagnate the vehicle growth like what they are doing now.

Moving so many ppl around in such a confined island may prove too much by 2030. Only time will tell.

Look at the attached stats.  Total vehicle population is close to 1mn or 1 vehicle per 5 human.

Look at number of cars from 2013 - 2015.  It is reducing.

WHoa, 1 in 5 is a lot.

Slowly reducing. But still many ppl are hoping for COE prices to drop. Looking at this trend. Dun think it will happen.

car lite means homes closer to destinations such as offices and schools, and connect homes to destinations by sheltered aircon park connectors.

... with travellator.

Note "Car-Lite" not "Car-Less"... There is a difference, they already factored in things like trains delay, breakdowns, overcrowded etc... "Car-lite" is easily achieved especially during school holidays... Really less traffic, less jam and smooth drive during every single school holidays...

So why not just staggered school hours? It would definitely reduce the car on the road by 60%.

It just mean prices will go up. Period.

Agree w u bro.. typical PAP talk for more $$$ to dig out from car users... want to drive? = $$$$$...

Rich = drive car, poor = take mrt, bus or walk!

The wealth inequality will be very evident in the years to come...

My car works from 7am-9am. Then 6pm to 8pm.

20 hours of break on every weekday. Still not enough?

Agree with some.  Be it direct impact on COE or ARF or whatever, these are all taxes.

Car-lite means lesser cars and if you want to own cars, you need to compete with others to get a car and cars will cost more.

Cant afford....take their DLT2
