The guy has no ties to Singapore and I don't see the point for him to do NS! Just let the guy denounce his citizenship and move on ... punish those who refuse to do NS and get benefits of living Singapore but allow those living in other countries who have no links to leave!

They must follow the procedure correctly.

At age 13, the father must write in to mindef to apply exit permit for him and indicate the desire to renounce citizenship.

Without doing so, he will be considered a defaulter if he does not enlist between 18-21.

Then must renounce citizenship at age 21.

It is the failure to do those steps that they are in such trouble.

I think if he renounce citizenship now also can. I had a platoon mate who renounced his citizenship halfway through NS and was discharged from NS immediately.

Edit: didn't read that he is not 21 yet.

Many ft who come find all kinds of reason not to serve NS.

Going after this guy is kinda hypocritical.

Seems you get better treatment of you are an ft.

Right or not i think he's lost the PR wars with his not speak chinese comment and with the MP making it about "defending" our citizens. This in particular makes NS sound like a punishment....which won't help.

Just let the fella renounce Sing citizenship and move on. Why make things difficult for all?

Mentioned in report, he is already ready to give up citizenship. So why the 21 years old thingy?

Yes, the parents may had missed the so call "time frame" but imagine being away for years and not returning, who will remember and bother about all these issues. Making a mountain out of a mole hole at its best.

if the pundek has no intention to work in Singapore in future, why bother asking NZ and Singapore MP for help and appeals.

just f off and that the end of it, why make so much shenanigans , say parents forget or daft and all that crap,

but wait, the parents can manoeuvre all the complex paper works to get her mum to be a PR in NZ

but

cant get their son out of NS in the stated timeframe.....

was the time frame too short .....12 years ...hmmmmmmm

was the rules of NS setup recently.......about 40years..hmmmmmm

anyway, he served or don't served, he's screwed :secret-laugh:

did I had a hard time in NS, hell yes,
1)thrown in DB twice
2) signed 30 extra 1 shot
3) countless of weekend duties
4) signed 1206, something foreigners in this forum wont understand

would I do it again, hell yes,

why, cos I met my gang of tiko brothers in there.

Think they just want the son to be able to step into Singapore to visit relatives or so on. Denounce at 21 comes to late because you are call up for duty before 21, and by not returning to serve means deserter leow. Once that happened, you can't step into Singapore soil. If do that, he will be arrested no matter how old or when he return to visit relatives here. So denounce must comes before the NS call-up by deferring until 21 years old but then now is.......dunno what to say.

Most people do not know the requirement for males to apply exit permits and deferment when they leave Singapore for other country. By the time they realize, it is probably because their sons are called up for NS. They would think they just have to renounce citizenship. Too late.

Let me write out the steps if anyone is interested -

1) Leave Singapore before son is 11 years old

2) Recommended to obtain a foreign passport by 13 years old. Do NOT renew Singapore passport at age 13. This non-renewal is so that the child is deemed NOT to have any social benefits from Singapore. Do NOT visit Singapore with Singapore passport. Come with the new passport.

3) Apply exit permit and inform Mindef that the family is on migration purpose with intention to renounce citizenship when son turns 21.

4) MUST get approval from Mindef to defer NS to 21 years old. Without this is as good as need to serve NS.

5) MUST remember to renounce citizenship at 21 years old.

6) The child will be able to visit Singapore but will most likely NEVER EVER get PR or work permit here.

True, If his heart is not in Singapore no point forcing our security responsibility onto  him, skali half way he tulan with NS life and decided to take his weapon and go on a rampage then seow leow [crazy] . IF It is his choice to renounce his sg citizenship then we should respect his, but to make things clear next time when he comes crawling back we will not take his bulls**t excuses that he was young and naïve then.
