Chinese police uncover huge fake jellyfish 'scam'

Police in eastern China have raided two fake jellyfish workshops, saying more than 10 tonnes is thought to have made its way into local food markets.

 

Police said the fake jellyfish had been made by mixing chemicals, adding that checks showed high levels of aluminium.

 

The syndicates made more than 170,000 yuan (£18,100; $26,100) in profits in a year of production, they added.

 

Jellyfish is very popular sliced and served as salad, particularly along China's southern and eastern coasts.

 

Huzhou municipal police in Zhejiang province, which is leading the investigation said they first found a workshop run by a

Mr Yuan, who made and sold the fake jellyfish at a farmer's market.

 

Mr Yuan then led detectives to a bigger workshop in Changzhou city in neighbouring Jiangsu province run by a Mr Jia who had taught him the "art" of faking jellyfish. He was detained alongside other syndicate members. The arrests were made in late April, but police only made it public late last week

They really like to fake anything/everything under the sun!

Fake to me seems like it depends on what we are willing to accept.

 

1. Fake Vigra (Blue Pill)

Despite the fact that fake Vigra can kill, is known to almost everybody who wants to buy them, still there are people who are willing to buy them and used them because it is cheaper. A case of ownself check ownself.

 

2.  Fake supplements (for health or enhancement of health)

There are literally thousands of supplements being sold in Green (Natural) stores throughout many countries and people are willing to pay high prices for them, sometimes in the hundred of dollars. Supplements without scientific evidence claims to cure this or improve that are literally making fake claims.

 

3. Fake descriptions

Many got fooled by Honey claims by different manufacturer. Some have less than 10% of honey but the rest are just plain old sugar. How about Maple Syrup that we buy in the supermarket? Many label clearly state they are Maple Syrup but if you read the labels they are not but just processed Sugar. Manuka Honey also, some shops claim will improve immunity but only when the Manuka factor hits a certain number than it is useful.

 

4. Fake consumer products

Eg Tires or spar parts. Small and big companies still buy them. Who is at fault? The manufacturer or the buyers? If there is no demand there will be no supply. Even for aeroplane parts there are fake spare parts that was reveal sometime ago when Indonesian airlines were buying and using them. So the blame in some cases cannot be just squarely on the manufacturer of fake products.

 

Fake luxury goods like handbags or glasses. Here I believe the luxury brands have themselves to blame, at least in part. Their profit margins are not in tens but in thousands of percent. The manufacturing cost of a pair of branded sunglasses cost about US10 to $30 dollars but are sold in the US for few hundred of dollars. Greed creates another business opportunity for other businessman.

 

5. Hence, as consumer we are also to blame and we also need to do our part, as the manufacturers and distributors do their responsible parts.

I think once the production starts it cannot stop. There's nothing to stop ppl when they know the recipe.

Just to share with the rest since we are talking about China (especially since I am in the plastics business) they can make them so cheap and I wonder what the Japs did wrong ; They (China) will use just lots of filler and recycled plastics in their material;  The Japs one can keep in the sunlight (outdoor) nothing really happens at least for 5-6 months; the China one on the other hand looks the same when new and within like 2 months will discolour (OK never mind that ) but show signs of cracking already; they will stinge on stabilisers, UV treatment and what not (using lots of recyled resins) & make a catalog of product same like the Japs and not show some of the test reports; So nowadays smarter buyers will ask for Test Reports;  As in Singapore the import of raw material cost is not much but the outdoor installation cost of replacement will end up more than cost of material; This kind of rampant cheating is going on especially so in the marine/construction industry here; all in the name of competition

 

Even I heard the same for faucets/ sanitary appliances; many of them no more solid brass- just die cast or whatever you can call them; Outside all look nice nice; End up plumber happy like fark ..... can make money over and over again

Is simply.  Avoid at all cost from any food stuff produced in China.  Be it preserved or processed food.

Hmmm... quite true, I believe its those inner part of the mainland as seafood are not that common.
