Commercial Vehicle COE Renewal

Hi,

I have a question pertaining to renewal of COE for commercial vehicle and the lifespan expiry date of the vehicle.

Scenario :   The commercial van's COE is expriing in Mar 2017 (van registered in Nov 1998, COE was renewed once in Mar 2007 for 10 years).   The lifespan expiry date is Nov 2018.

If I renew the COE in Mar 2017 by 5 years with the lifespan expiring in Nov 2018, it will mean that I must deregister the vehicle by Nov 2018.

Question:

1. Can I renew the COE given that the lifespan expiry date is in Nov 2018?

2. In this case, does LTA refund back the unused portion of the COE to me upon deregistration?

3. Is it worthwhile to do so?   The condition of the van is very good and it is a waste to scrap in Mar 2017.

Appreciate feedback from fellow members here.  I understand can call LTA hotline to check, but it is always good to hear out different opinions.

Thanks !

Hi,

I think you get all your facts wrong. There is no lifespan for your car, there is only COE expire date for your car.

1. You renewed your car in Mar 2007 for 10 years mean your renewed COE will expire in Mar 2017 and you must deregister / scrap your car.

Qns:

1. You can still renew your COE in Mar 2017 if your car is still roadworthy.

2. LTA will refund your unused portion of the COE upon deregistration.

3. Please refer to answer for qns 1.

Hi, first of all, thanks for the reply.

In my starting thread, I mean commercial vehicle, not car.   Is there any difference?

The car can still renew COE as long as previous round renewed is 10 years, there is no need to scrap /  de-register.

Pls dun anyhow, you got the fact wrong. There is a lifespan of 20 yrs from the original date of registration for commercial vehicle. if not you already see those smoky 1970s lorries on the road liao.

Commercial vehicles can renew 2 x 5 years for COE within the lifespan which means TS can renew 5 years COE again but only can drive till 2018 due to the lifespan is up. LTA will rebate him the balance COE.

Normal car can still renew COE, see my ans in red above.

Just renew. It's just like paying in advance to rent from LTA. In the meantime look for another vehicle if you find something better just scrap the old van and get it prorated down to the number of days left unused of the 5year Coe.

Thanks.  This is what I'm thinking of, as it is still in good condition, will probably just renew come COE renewal, and drive for another 1yr+ before scrapping.

The market depreciation for typical toyota vans range at least 9k/yr onwards, some as high as 13k.   A bit crazy, i must say !   Higher than private cars.......
