Wishcumstrue 6th Gear September 22, 2016 Share September 22, 2016 Auto-GCAS Saves Unconscious F-16 Pilot - Declassified USAF Footage 2016 Pilot was in an standard ACM exercise. Video started before pilot execute hard left turn from 2.5G HUD shows max out at 8.4G Can hear pilot grunting as he fought the G force. Pilot lost consciousness. Plane rapidly descended from +17k ft to 11k ft in under 12 sec doing over 600kt ( +1200kph) Other jets radioed (almost screaming) the unconscious pilot to recover. Diving plane passed 11,000 ft alt triggering the GCAS. Auto recover triggered with audio and visual pull up command on HUD. Plane bottomed out at below 4500 ft alt (1.3km) recovery over 9G. Plane stabilised after climbing back to over 11,000 ft Exercise ceased with "knock it off" call out. http://aviationweek.com/technology/auto-gcas-saves-unconscious-f-16-pilot-declassified-usaf-footage ↡ Advertisement
Ake109 6th Gear September 27, 2016 Share September 27, 2016 Is that the G meter? How come it stays locked at 9.1 when the plan was in auto recovery and doing the climb back up?
Wishcumstrue 6th Gear September 28, 2016 Author Share September 28, 2016 Is that the G meter? How come it stays locked at 9.1 when the plan was in auto recovery and doing the climb back up? There are two G meters on the HUD: Current G - top left besides the alt scale. Max G - bottom left ( the one you mentioned). Watch from 0.38min and u will understand the difference. GeraldLWJ 1st Gear April 12, 2017 Share April 12, 2017 Is that the G meter? How come it stays locked at 9.1 when the plan was in auto recovery and doing the climb back up? This is because F-16 has a max G limit of 9.0 The computer tells the aircraft to pull up at 9G is because by maxing out the aircraft limits to 9G, this means the aircraft is max performing, thus creating a smallest radius of circle which relates to lesser height loss. As to why it pulled 9.1G I guess environment is also a factor to the +0.1G. I guess the aircraft could be un-serviceable after this due to the the G reading being out of limits. GeraldLWJ 1st Gear April 13, 2017 Share April 13, 2017 One essential skill is to master g force Sometimes the g force hits the pilot in a particular spot in the head Need to control the g force That's right. To counter the forces in flight, we wear a G-Suit which has inflatable bladders to squeeze our legs and torso to prevent blood from flowing down to them causing a lack of oxygen in our brain. We also conduct AGSM (Anti-G Straining Manoeuvres) You can find more about that on YouTube! haha. you must be a big aviation fan to have created an account to reply to a 7 month old post. so just because of that 0.1G, they have to scrap the aircraft?! HAHAHA! No. I'm a Pilot and I have done similar training. I created this post in search of a car, not to reply to this. I just stumbled upon this post and thought I could share a thing or two. No, they don't scrap the aircraft. The aircraft is still fly-able just that it will be down for a period of time for engineers to inspect if there are any structural damage or system degradation due to the over limit. If after inspection and nothing is found, the aircraft can be back to service to fight another day!

Pull too much Gs and the pilot can be knocked out. I wonder if having a big helmet helps the pilot on this? All I know is must always were the G suit as it forces the blood to the extremities.

When pulling Gs I think the pilot makes those granting and groaning sounds to help prevent being knocked out.

Yeah manDifferent people have different amount of g tolerence I think with their training, pilots can tolerate more g stress But everyone has their g tipping point, a particular spot in which people will faint Once the pilot hits their particular g spot, He will faint To prevent the pilot from fainting, he must wear the g suit to keep sufficient blood in his head But I think he still need the big helmet to protect his head
