Skoda's New Large SUV Will Bear The Kodiaq Name

Skoda has chosen to put an end to months of speculation by officially announcing the Kodiaq name for its upcoming7-seater SUV

And yes, the pun in the title is intended, as the moniker was inspired by the Kodiak bear that lives on an island in Alaska.

There's no typo, either; according to the company, it is derived from the language of the Alutiiq natives, who use the letter "q" at the end of characteristic animal names.

Sitting at 4.70 meters in length, the SUV that will be inspired by the VisionS Concept is 21 cm longer than the Volkswagen Tiguan and 34 cm longer than the Seat Ateca. Unlike its Spanish cousin, it will be able to sit seven people "comfortably", as the automaker states.

A very well proportioned mid size SUV. Personally, it look a little like BMW X series (from the side profile and rear)... And the 190ps 2.0TDI engine shall make it a Sorento / Santa Fe killer!

Challenging the likes of the Renault Koleos, Hyundai Santa Fe and Peugeot 5008, Skoda’s new Kodiaq SUV has been spied for the first time in production form.

As expected, the Kodiaq is very close to the VisionS study from this year’s Geneva Motor Show featuring the same silhouette and key details that blend Skoda’s existing design language into an SUV body shape.

Based on the VW Group’s modular MQB platform, the Kodiaq will likely share the same extended wheelbase length as the upcoming VW Tiguan XL that will be offered in North America and China, measuring close to 2.8 meters, while the SUV’s overall length should be similar to the concept at around 4.7 meters.

Named after a species of Alaskan bear, albeit slightly altered as it’s usually called ‘Kodiak’, the Czech automaker’s SUV will have three row of seats, with the last two seats popping up from the boot floor.

In Europe, the engine lineup will include three gasoline burners: the 1.4-liter TSI in two outputs with 125 PS (123 HP) and 150 PS (148 HP), the latter with a cylinder deactivation system, and the 1.8-liter TSI, rated at 180 PS (177 HP). Those looking for more better fuel economy will get to choose between two diesels, the entry-level 1.6-liter TDI, producing 120 PS (118 HP), and the 2.0-liter TDI, with 150 PS (148 HP) or 190 PS (187 HP). A plug-in hybrid model is also planned but won’t join the range at launch.

We expect to see the Kodiaq for the first time at the 2016 Paris Motor Show this fall.

The Czech brand says the seven-seat Kodiaq will make its global debut on 1 September in Berlin, Germany, ahead of the previously-speculated debut at the Paris motor show in October.

The Kodiaq wears the familiar Skoda ‘moustache’ front grille, while the headlights and LED signature look pretty similar to the units seen on the closely-related Superb.

Also shown in the images and video are the Kodiaq’s alloy wheels with an Audi-like 10-spoke raked star-shape design, which looks to be a more practical interpretation of the much larger set on the Vision S.

The company says the Kodiaq will have best-in-class luggage capacity of 720 to 2065 litres, a surround camera system (a first for the brand), and will be offered with five engines – two turbo diesels and three turbo petrols – along with the option of front- and all-wheel drive.

So far, the only confirmed engine is the 132kW 2.0-litre TSI turbo petrol fitted to numerous Volkswagen Group models, which Skoda says will be the “most powerful” petrol powerplant in the range – casting doubt on whether the SUV will be offered with the 206kW 2.0-litre turbo from the Superb.

Inside, Skoda says the Kodiaq will feature class-leading infotainment systems, which will offer a WiFi hotspot, internet connectivity, along with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, depending on grade.

The power is below the Sharan/GTI.  Assuming that torque is also lowered in tandem, it suggest pairing with DQ200, which has a threshold of 250nm.

Taken from Autocar UK today:

"Skoda considers the US

Skoda boss Bernhard Maier has said the brand is considering entering the US market.

“The next three markets Skoda will enter are South Korea, Singapore and Iran, but America is the one that we don’t currently compete in with the biggest potential,” he said. “We need to do a feasibility study. If we do decide to compete in the US, we will have one chance to make a good first impression. We feel that if we were there now, the Kodiaq would be a home-run car.” "

So we should be expecting a new AD in SG soon?

I personally would be very keen on the latest Superb, such a handsome car.

There are rumours that Skoda has appointed a new AD in Singapore, and it will be operational next year. Let see if any official announcement soon. I like the Kodiaq.
