2016 Skoda Kodiaq

Seems that the key is the significantly lower kerb weight, which is similar to Outlander and lower than Xtrail (even though it's longer) and an amazing 20-25% lower than Santa Fe / Sorento.

This is good for performance and for FC. Key question is whether the reduction in weight has any corresponding tradeoffs ie sound insulation or "continental feel".

Looking forward to the first reviews.

1.6 ton seems to be a reasonable figure for the 1.4 TSI variant, since the engine is already much lighter than a 2.0L unit (around 75Kg iirc). Many auto manufacturers begin to realise what a simple weight reduction could do to the fuel economy rating, as well as boosting a better performance. Honda Japan has annouced (last year) that they will be embarking on weight reduction journey to shave off up to 10% simply by using welding to replace bolt and nuts...

Transmission options for petrol versions looks intriguing. 6 speed dry clutch for 1.4TSI and 7 speed dry clutch for 2.0TSI. Did not realize there is a 6 speed dry clutch version, and the 7 speed dry clutch aka DQ200 is usually for torque applications less than 250nm.

It should be a typo error. Looking at the spec for Diesel variant, it state 7 speed wet clutch, which tie with the press release issued during the Kodiak launch on 1 September 2016.

The new 7-speed dual-clutch transmission is making its debut at ŠKODA. It is a variant that has been designed for powerful engines with torque of up to 600 Nm.

Skoda Kodiaq mentioned in ST page D19 today.

Chris Tan says it's unlikely to come to Singapore as Skoda does not have a distributor here.

Then again, Singapore was one of the focus countries recently mentioned by Skoda.

"...Maier said the three new markets that currently most interest Skoda are South Korea, Singapore and Iran. But he added: “America is the one that we don't currently compete in with the biggest potential.” - See more at: http://www.autocarpro.in/news-international/skoda-kodiaq-kick-start-strong-suv-family-21591#sthash.UlBYmABv.dpuf

Look like the rumors of Skoda has appointed an AD in Singapore may not be unfound, now that a time frame of 12 months has been mentioned in the latest news!

Skoda Will Reportedly Make South Korean Entrance In 2017

We know Skoda has big plans, eyeing the U.S. market in its quest to expand in 120 countries by 2025, but before that happens, the Czech automaker will reportedly make its entrance in East and Southeast Asia.

Even after trademarking the “Superb”, "Octavia", “Yeti”, and “H-Tec” nameplates in the United States, Skoda has no apparent time frame for a final decision on whether it crosses the Atlantic, but in the meantime, the Czech company aims to sell its products in South Korea and Singapore in the next 12 months.

According to Automotive News, a company spokeswoman said that Skoda will “most likely” start sales in South Korea next year. This move will also help Volkswagen recover in the country after South Korea banned sales of 80 model variants made by the German automaker and its subsidiaries (including Audi and Bentley).

Skoda, on the other hand, hasn’t been affected by VW’s scandal and is relying on the newly launched Kodiaq to succeed, with its CEO, Bernhard Maier, saying that the SUV will help the company open new markets. According to the unnamed spokeswoman, one of those “new markets” could be the U.S.

Makes public debut in Paris motor show. Looks good.

Skoda again mentions intention to enter Singapore market.

Interestingly, Skoda will flip positioning with parent VW in Australia ie Kodiaq likely to be priced above Tiguan, with which it shares basic underpinnings.

Not a direct comparison, as Tiguan is a smaller SUV with 5 seats (on standard wheel base) vs Kodiaq which come with 7 seats (sitting on a LWB). The extra 2 seat is an cost option by itself, and not to firget the Tiguan in Australia start with 1.4, vs. 2.0 for Kodiaq.

BTW, it might be a good strategy for VAG to slowly increasing the price of Skoda, and market it as a poor man Audi, than poor cousin of VW. Looking at all the recently launched Skoda model, they seems to be getting all the good stuff from Audi, than VW. Case in point, the 2.0TDI unit for Kodiaq is actually the same unit that can be found on the 2nd gen Audi Q5, and so are the 7 speed DSG gearbox. In fact the top of line Superb come in the form of 280ps 2.0 TSI, vs 252ps in th Audi A6 2.0 TFSI...

Haha agreed.

You should apply for a role with the new AD as chief marketing officer...

Thanks for the compliment, but I am just stating what I know, not any sales preaching... [;)]

Interestingly, among the 4 core passenger car brand in VAG, Skoda has the longest history, and thus I felt that much could be done to further strengthen the brand in the next 10 years.

Skoda: Dec 1895

Audi: Apr 1910

VW: Jan 1937

Seat: May 1950

Thanks. Very impressive indeed.

Most amazing is the pricing - they are pricing it marginally below the Nissan Xtrail/Mitsubishi Outlander across the range ie low spec x trail/outlander vs low spec Kodiaq to high spec xtrail/outlander vs high spec Kodiaq.

It's priced a massive c. 20-30% lower than the Kia Sorento across the range.

If they can price it in a similar range in Singapore, it's looking like an undisputed class leader indeed.

Good comprehensive review.

A lot of clever design touches.

http://www.caradvice.com.au/500633/2017-skoda-kodiaq-review/

Excellent review out of UK

In particular, I like:

- Large boot capacity when all 7 seats are up (270L / For comparison, the larger Sorento is only 142L)

- The responsive 8" touchscreen (base versions get the 6.5")

- 2nd row seats not only get aircon vents but also climate control (usually only in high end cars)

Do not like:

- No 3rd row aircon vents

From the first drive, sounds like the materials used are pretty impressive and NVH is decent.  Engine line-up not the most exciting but base engine is very competitive amongst the Outlander / X-trail competitor set.

Space wise, its much better than X-Trail. Refinement wise, its much better than Outlander. In terms of branding to the Singapore buyer, being part of VAG, its arguable on par with or better than Hyundai-Kia at the SGD130 - 160k price point. Ticks a lot of boxes indeed !

I think pricing is the real game changer. I half suspect Singapore will get the low spec version and supplement with local mods (ie Tan Chong / Komoco style) rather than the high spec version like Australia ... if we ever get an AD, that is.

I have been following the launch and reviews closely... Here's a movie length version review which is really quite comprehensive and entertaining too...
