The unfortunate demise of Jayalalithaa on 5 December 2016, fondly known as 'Amma', 'Puratchi Thalaivi' and the 'People's CM', has put the whole of Tamil Nadu into a state of mourning. For an actress-turned-politician to come as far and to earn the respect and love of the people in a territory marked by patriarchy, her story has been remarkable.

While to me , its just another sad passing, I am just taken aback by the flying suspension to india and the SAFETY aspect and travel advisory during that period.

Just an aspect that I never knew that when a minster passed on, there can be so much anxiety created in the country.

India air safety?

Hahaha what do you expect from that country.

All pretend got no fuel and need to land immediately.

No need to take their turn one.

Then after landing find all the planes got lots of fuel.

:D

I'm not very familiar with her. But her popularity is at almost a religious level or those reserved for Bollywood superstars.

Well to be such a high level minister in India where women are often treated worse than cattle, she must have been extremely charismatic and shrewd.

The second statement is hardly fair. India has had many leaders who are women.

Indira Gandhi (Prime Minister)

Pratibha Patel (President and before that, Governor of Rajasthan)

Sonia Gandhi (President of the Indian National Congress Party, and she made a serious bid to become PM. The main objection was her foreign-status, I don't think her gender came up even once).

I'd say women are doing fine in positions of power there. Much more so than in Singapore, and in most East Asian-majority countries. Heck, they're doing better than "enlightened Western" America when looking at leaders of State (PM and President).

Fair point.

But the Indians like many Asian and western societies are still deeply patriarchal. To succeed as a woman, is definitely remarkable.

In a country where to buy a baby, a female child is worth 1/4 the $ commanded by a male child.

Seems like in wiki, she spends half her time battling corruption charges lol.
