Volvo safety and Lotus handling at Geely price.

Why not? [laugh]

Moral of the story: CASH is KING! For those that have seen the quality of the very first Geely that landed on our shore, well you should be shaking your head like me, wondering how can such 3rd grade auto manufacturer be buying Volvo and Lotus... Sorry I am not biased but I still can not picture these brand together.

Is it just me, but does this not sound parallel to the saying of

Cheaper (Geely)

You should look at the current Geely line up and stop living in the MK years. In terms of design I would say its even better than some Jap makes. The Lynk & Co series which was projected to be produced in Malaysia looked fabulous.

A Canada Man Got A Ticket For Going One KPH Over The Speed Limit After Passing A Cop

A man in Canada tempted fate and could have suffered the consequences if it hadn’t been for a clear-eyed judge. Mathieu Gagne was driving behind a cop on a two-lane road in Alberta, Canada, on Friday when he crossed the broken yellow line in the middle to pass. Gagne told CTV, the officer was driving slower than the posted speed limit. This turned out to be a mistake as the cop proceeded to pull over and cite Gagne for driving a single kph over the limit.

How did the officer know that Gagne was going a single kph over the speed limit? It was, apparently, an educated guess.

The officer, who was not identified, won’t be disciplined, even though it looked like the incident would have some pretty real consequences for Gagne, namely a ticket that would have cost him 78 Canadian dollars in addition to points on his license.

This is a real near miss!

Earlier this month, Jeseace Quick was stopped on the tracks in her car when the railroad arms came down in High Point, NC, reports local news outlet WFMY. In the dashcam video from the car facing her, you can see her exit the vehicle to get the f**k out of the way before an oncoming Amtrak train slammed into it.

After that, Quick left the scene (and her car), but turned herself into police a few days later. Traffic officer A. Goins told the outlet, “We certainly understand the driver getting out of the vehicle and moving to safety and we are glad they were able to do so but anytime you are involved in an accident it’s always best to remain at the scene and speak with officers.”

Quick was charged with No Operator’s License and also cited for a railroad crossing violation. But I’m glad she wasn’t hurt!

Important lesson in life: Never try to outsmart your boss. else... ... [crazy]  [crazy]

Exclusive: VW seeks to curb competition from Skoda - sources

Volkswagen managers and unions are seeking to curb competition from lower-cost stablemate Skoda, move some of its production to Germany and make the Czech brand pay more for shared technology, company sources told Reuters.

As VW struggles to cut jobs and spending at German factories and turn the page on dieselgate, Skoda’s superior car reviews and profitability have intensified the brands’ rivalry within the Volkswagen empire.

VW now wants to reduce what it sees as Skoda’s unfair advantages - combining German technology with cheaper labour - and reaffirm the top-selling brand’s primacy ahead of a wave of new electric car launches, the sources said.

The tussle between VW and Skoda is reviving tensions at the heart of the Volkswagen group between profits and jobs, and between central control and autonomy for its 12 vehicle brands.

“Instead of devoting our efforts to beating Tesla, we may just be setting up a futile internal conflict,” said one manager.

Once the butt of jokes, Skoda has blossomed under 26 years of VW group ownership into a successful mid-market carmaker, steadily winning business from rivals - including VW - and surpassing even Audi’s operating profit margin last year.

At the same time, VW is facing thousands of job cuts as management moves to trim excess capacity at German factories. Its powerful domestic unions see Skoda’s success as both a threat and a potential lifeline.

VW workers’ representatives are now demanding the transfer of some Skoda production to their underused German plants, a source close to the supervisory board told Reuters. The proposal aims to offset declining output of the VW Passat and ageing Golf that could otherwise threaten more jobs.

They are also making the case that Skoda should pay higher royalties to use VW’s main common vehicle platform. The so-called MQB architecture also underpins mid-sized models from the group’s Audi and SEAT brands.

Responding to the news, Czech Prime Minister Bohuslav Sobotka said he would meet Skoda management and unions to ask for clarification.

The government will seek to ensure that VW investment plans are followed through and that “production is not moved outside the country”, a statement released by Sobotka’s office said.

An unusual move, in anticipation of autonomous driving becoming the norm in the future...

Renault Strikes Magazine Deal for Robo-Car Passengers

Renault SA is buying a stake in a media company as Chief Executive Officer Carlos Ghosn plans to stretch the carmaker’s suite of products to entertaining passengers in future driverless vehicles.

The French automaker will purchase a 40 percent stake in Challenges Group, that publisher of the namesake weekly economic magazine as well as four monthly science and history journals, it said in a statement Wednesday. Renault and French media group will work on new content specially designed for autonomous vehicles.

“After smartphones, which opened new channels via digital kiosks, the automotive sector also becomes a tool to share news, with new types of content,” Challenges Chief Executive Officer Claude Perdriel wrote in an editorial published on its website.

The unusual deal marks the latest move out of carmakers’ comfort zone as vehicles move to a connected, self-driving future with a host of new competitors like Apple Inc. and ride-hailing provider Uber Technologies Inc. Manufacturers are spending record amounts on the transformation, with a still-uncertain payoff and lack of clarity which new business opportunity, like predictive maintenance or on-board entertainment, will take off.

Ghosn, who also chairs the Renault Nissan Mitsubishi alliance, first discussed the investment plant with Challenges in September, Perdriel said. The alliance plans to build a fully autonomous vehicle by 2022 and is working to offer robo-taxi services.

“With the development of the connected driverless vehicle, users will have more time to spend on other activities while in the car,” Renault said.

A number of French companies and entrepreneurs outside the media industry hold stakes in publishers and broadcasters. LVMH, the world’s largest luxury goods maker controlled by Bernard Arnault, owns French business daily Les Echos, while Le Figaro newspaper is owned by defense company Groupe Dassault. Iliad-founder Xavier Niel and Lazard’s Matthieu Pigasse jointly own Le Monde and L’Obs.

The Renault-Challenges deal puts together two sectors in the midst of battling challenges from new technology and changes in consumer behavior. Perdriel acknowledged most media are struggling to be profitable, even as Challenges magazine’s revenue have been on the rise this year. Renault is the bottom performer on France’s CAC 40 Index this year with the lowest valuation as investors fret over the auto industry’s ability to master the costly shift to electric cars.

Give the man a Tiger! May he be blessed for the rest of his life for the good deed. [thumbsup]

Chinese crane driver labelled a hero after winching four people from submerged bus

A crane operator from eastern China has been labelled a hero after using his vehicle to rescue four people from a bus that had skidded off the road and into a river, according to local media reports.

The incident happened on Wednesday in Changzhou, Jiangsu province, after the bus collided head on with a sports utility vehicle, Modern Express reported.

The crash sent the bus careering off the road and into the water, where it promptly sank, the report said.

When the unnamed construction worker saw what had happened, he quickly climbed down from his crane and dashed across a busy road to survey the scene.

He then ran back to his vehicle, got inside and drove it over to the river bank. With the jib extended out over the water he winched the four passengers up from the bus and manoeuvred them to safety.

By the time firefighters arrived on the scene, all five people – the driver made his own way – were back on dry land, the report said.

And Mercedes-Benz at Geely price soon? :XD:  :XD:

Geely May Soon Become Daimler’s Largest Shareholder

Geely is reportedly planning to become Daimler’s largest shareholder, Germany’s Bild am Sonntag reports.

Talk of the Chinese carmaker purchasing a stake in Daimler isn’t new. In fact, the Germans turned down an offer from Geely to take a stake of up to 5 per cent via a discounted share placement last November. At the time, Daimler said Geely was welcome to buy shares in the open market. It appears the Chinese company is doing just that. :serious-business:

Daimler’s currently largest shareholder is the Kuwait Investment Authority, with 6.8 per cent. If these reports prove accurate, Geely could be on the verge of surpassing this figure. Daimler’s second largest shareholder is BlackRock with 6 per cent.

Automotive News reports that Geely is eager to get its hands on Daimler’s advanced electric car battery technology. Additionally, the brand is said to be keen in establishing an electric car joint venture with Daimler in Wuhan, China.

Geely already has a controlling stake in Volvo and Lotus, while Daimler has Chinese joint ventures with BAIC Motor Corp and BYD.

I think only 3% only.

Anything more requires regulatory clearances.

Volvo XC90 is The Safest Car on The Road

FOR AS long as most drivers can remember, when it comes to choosing a safe car, Volvos come highly recommended by family and friends – and many have a story to tell about how someone’s life was saved by a Volvo in a car crash.

Now experts have backed up the anecdotes with hard facts. After examining official accident figures, they discovered that NO driver or passenger of a Volvo XC90 has been killed, since official records began in 2004 (in UK).

Thatcham Research, which tests new cars for safety, analysed Government records based on police accident reports, and compared them with data from car insurers, and found no record of anyone having been killed in Volvo’s largest SUV.

The seven-seat family car, which was introduced in 2002 and replaced with a second-generation model in 2015, has proved popular with British drivers. To date, more than 54,000 have been sold here.

Matthew Avery, director of research at Thatcham, said that the car’s safety record stood out for being unblemished:  “Often when a vehicle is new, you don’t see fatalities, as it takes time for models to build up sales numbers. But we have around 14 years’ history of the XC90, and that stands out.

“The old XC90 is very good. In terms of people being killed, in 14 years, I can’t see any”, Avery told Auto Express.

The company has often led the development of passive safety systems, including the three-point seat belt, and is now using technology to help avoid accidents, such as fitting automatic emergency braking across all its new cars as standard. Hakan Samuelsson, President and CEO of the Swedish car maker, has set an objective of ensuring that from 2020, nobody is killed or seriously injured in a new Volvo.

Avery said: “The clear message is that safety is a mixture of active and passive systems. You need the passive systems to protect people in the even of a crash, while active systems help prevent them in the first place.”

The current XC90 boasts a maximum five-star safety rating from Euro NCAP, the independent organisation that tests the protection offered by new cars. And when the first generation model was assessed, in 2003, it also scored five-stars.

Truckers, fall in!

A man tried to jump off a Detroit overpass. Then 13 truckers saved him.

A line of 13 truckers created a wall on I-696 in metro Detroit to help prevent a man from jumping off the overpass

While you were sleeping, a unique act of heroism took place overnight along I-696 in metro Detroit.

A line of 13 truckers, with assistance from Michigan State Police, created a wall on the I-696 freeway near the Coolidge exit to help prevent a man from jumping off the overpass.

Chris Harrison, who claims to have been part of the "trucker wall" and shared some photos in a Facebook post on the Twisted Truckers page, said the act of heroism took place between 1 and 3 a.m. Tuesday, starting with one truck.

Harrison, in replying to other Facebook users, said the cops waved 6 or 7 of the truckers through on the eastbound side of the freeway, then did the same thing on the westbound side.
