Next time they have coe on water

I would see food tax, space tax and air tax coming within the next 2-3 generations.

Food tax to reduce food wastage because importing food is getting more expensive, due to the exploding global population, while crop yields are limited, and reduce overfishing, over killing of poultries.

Air tax to even out the use oxygen so that there will be enough oxygen for more people, as planting and maintain more trees costs more money. Want more oxygen above the national average, buy oxygen tanks.

Space tax would be another tax, on top of the taxes now we pay for bigger houses and bigger cars we own. The govt will set a national standard on the posture of how you sit, stand, walk, the number of seats you want to hog on a dining table in a restaurant, etc.

The CCTVs everywhere will monitor your moves everywhere outside and ensure your outdoor activities adheres to the national standard of space you take up for each activity.

A warning signal will show in your smartphone to keep within the limits if you stretched your hands or legs too outwards that blocks the ways of others, etc. Non compliance within 10 secs will be taxed in your tax bill via your smartphone.

ERP gantry like systems will be set up in crowded places during peak hours to control crowds and queues in the area, as well as reduce crimes.

Don't move in to the back of buses and trains, taxed via your smartphone.

Walk slowly, create a space in front of the crowded place and delay the people behind, taxed via your smartphone.

Stretch your arms in a crowded train, taxed via your smartphone and given a warning in anticipation that you are at a risk of committing a crime like, theft, molestation, etc.

By making sure that every area of space is not wasted, they can justify to squeeze their 6.9, 10, or even 50 million people in the future.

Tianmo å, I understand your point of view, especially from the generation whom has experienced water rationing before. I do survive a time which there is no water for a day due to repairs on a leaking pipe. I didn't bathe that day. I could have gone to my relative's house to do that but I didn't. I drink from mineral water. Go downstairs coffeeshop to use the toilet. Yes, it was tough, but I managed to survive through the day.

Lets look into the perspective of the whole country stand together and don't pay the additional bill, or even the whole bill.

I take your above description as scenario 1.

Let's look at scenario 2.

- Since all have decided not to pay for the bill, most of them will be prepared to store some water supply for a few days before the tap is switch off. Those whom has experienced water rationing before will take even more drastic measures, store more water.

- On the day when the tap is switched off, families will use the stored water to start the day, minimizing the use via simple chores. Some will probably head down to the offices/schools for their usage if the supply is not shut down there.

- If by mid day the water supply is still not reinstated, what will you think the adults will do? Most will probably take half a day off to look for water supplies, like buying mineral water from supermarkets, go to those areas that still have water supply (since it stated earlier that the cut off can be done in phases in different places), or even go Malaysia to get. They will also rely on social media to find out where to get water, where is still not affected, etc.

- Probably half of the workforce island wide would have stopped working to look for and store water as much as they can. They may probably take a few more days leave to search for more water. At the end of the first day, the economy would have lost millions of dollars since more than half of the workforce is not working.

- People will be addressing their unhappiness all over social media that the govt switched off their water supply. Many will probably by then curse and swear the govt, even if they are still able to sustain by then. By the next day, the whole world may probably know that the country is facing a water crisis via social media and the internet.

- By day 2, such news continue to spread worldwide and may probably plummet our share prices to low record levels. News of many people not going to work but trying to find ways to get the possible means obtaining their life source as much as they can continue to spread. The productivity essentially dips lower and businesses can't operate. Until this state, what would you think foreigners and foreign investors and firms would think of the country and govt handling this situation? With so much uncertainty happening around the world, how long will these people hold confidence on this country in the long run?

- Oppositions will take this chance and hit hard at the incumbent, citing such drastic measures is unwarranted where a compromise can be instead be practiced to calm the situation in a less messy way. And those places where the govt shut down their water supplies, especially those hit first, would they ever get another footing in the next election? Most likely they will be kicked out.

- And the aftermath after the tap is on under pressure from corporations and businesses, what will happen to the incumbent? What will be their footing in the next election? Kicked out will be a high possibility.

That is scenario 2.

Let's just ask this simple question and look into another perspective,

If the whole country stand together and don't pay the additional bill, what other options that the govt can solve the problem? Is shutting down the tap country eventually the only solution?

Nice scenario but just a fantasy

We can't even get 31% of the whole country to tick a box together

Earlier this week was watching a Taiwanese documentary about water conservation.

Taiwan building actually have to cater to rain water collection, and private house owner build their own " rain water piggy bank " as they call it for various uses, including watering of plant, washing of floor etc.

With the amount of new building and ' upgrading ' we are doing now, it would be helpful to not only add rain storage places / capacity,  and also reduce flash flood, if we also have some kind of system to store rain water in each building for non-potable purpose.

And they will charge/tax you more on stronger structural integrity of the building because holding an additional tank of water on the rooftop means heavier loads on the building itself.
