Today I was driving at the IMM carpark and my car got up a curb and the tyre got slightly chipped. Images here:

Should I replace the tyre or will I survive with this? This tyre has only been used for 4000km now and I drive a Nissan Qashqai 2.0l

Thanks for the help!

Theoretically, the wheel wall already compromise (seems more than 1/2 the thickness of the tyre wall).

I assume you are not Lewis Hamilton, you are no desire to play bumper car on road, not out trying to experience what out of control car feels like or desperately trying to fit the steering wheel around your neck.

UK tyre law states (use this as a guide)

Tyre Cuts

A cut in excess of 25mm or 10% of the section width of the tyre , whichever is the greater, measured in any direction on the outside of the tyre and deep enough to reach the ply or cord would deem the tyre illegal.

Ply or Cord Exposure

If there is any cut in the tyre no matter how small which exposes cords, then the tyre is illegal.

I believe these sidewall damage cannot be repaired. In addition, apart from safety issue, there may be increase in noise during your drive.

My humble opinion is, please change your tire for your safety. Your 4 wheels are the only contact you have with the road when you drive.

Since the tyre is still new, you can replace only that particular tyre. Shouldn't be a problem.

Safety is paramount.

Hi bro,

Is this tyre on the front or rear wheel.

My advise If is on the front wheel - better to have it replace.

On the rear wheel - should be ok if you do not travel beyond 130km/h.

OEM tyre should be easily source from outside tyre shop.

I get it changed....not worth to have stress on the compromised tyre when u are at eway speeds.

you have made the most appropriate decision.

Hi for your own safety as well as others' , change it. Change the one that is damaged. Just 1 piece. Do go search for similar tyre.

I have learnt a valuable lesson in the past to check on tyres that have contacted serious impacting abrasions with the kerb. But for my case, there was no signs outside, no chips, scratches, whatsoever.

I continue driving for a few weeks until the tyre inner wall gave way, burst and left a very big hole, rendered the wheel almost immovable, one night, a very late night along Old Lim Chu Kang Rd. Luckily I wasn't driving very fast and it is the rear wheel.

I have to wait for at least 2 hours for the tow truck to come to help to change the spare tyre as the nuts have rusted and I do not have the right tools to deal with this. Luckily I had two friends to accompany me that night.

So better get such impacted tyres checked by the mechanic. If it needs to change, change it.

My car last time also kena left rear but funny thing i nvr notice it. I only realised when i pump air the rear left tyre pressure always drop faster than other tyres.

I tried to find the cause but cant find. Seems the tyre looks fine to me. But got one time i want go KL then for safety i go bring tyre shop. They removed the rear left tyre and to my dismay theres a deep cut on inner sidewall about 3cm.

And whats worse? My car on 20 inch tyre. The shop doesnt carry that and checked online its not cheap so end up downsize my rim and changed all 4 lol
