Hokkaido Summer Holidays

the airport closed the day after my in laws left.

Yup there was a cold spell last year. By right the weather then in early-mid dec should have been -5 to 5. but it was more like -12 to 0 then.

They took tour.

Hey, my friend left also around that time, they said they were lucky to make it out before it closed.

We went Taiwan and Australia before. 3 times, all either rented Hyundai iMax (or Starex) to self-drive, or with chauffeur-cum-tourguide to bring us around...

Now want to try other countries, which is so difficult to find (cos i kiasi...)

If your parents can't take cold, I would not recommend Hokkaido in Dec. Also, since your parents are unable to walk for long, I would not recommend F&E unless it's very well planned without public transport.

Yah, cold temp is a problem.

But if take tour, we felt it might be difficult too as my mother might not be able to catch up with the group. This was more obvious before she had the knee ops. Walked so slowly, by the time she alight from bus and make her way to any location, the group might already be heading back...  [bigcry]

So we gathered F&E was more suitable. The planning part is the siong one...

The main highways are cleared of snow and ice with salt spray. Within the city the roads were icy and very very bumpy, like inside the freezer or your fridge. We drove and once almost hit the car in front (I forgot the longer braking distance!). After that I became more careful!

You can totally do Hokkaido with a rented car but it's not going to be cheap. I saved money by mixing BMW with rented car.

You can consider Tasmania in Dec. Air con temp but no snow. Cons is food are more expensive and Chinese food (which elders prefer) are hard to find. One solution is to cook own dinner since there's nothing much to do at night.

The easiest place to bring elders is Taiwan. Food is suitable and no language barrier. Brought my parent there earlier this year. Hired a driver to drive us around for the whole trip. Just need to plan the itinerary.

So far, all my trips are all F&E. Planning can be quite fun. For starters, google "places to visit in blah blah blah". Or visit travel agencies and take copies of their package itinerary as references. Take note of all the address or places you want to visit or things you want to buy. Then connect the dots using google map. Don't pack too much things in a day. I normally plan 2 places to visit and R&R at night. Slot in shopping timeslots here and there for wife and mother to make them happy if they don't like to see mountain and water.

Most annoying part is matching the accommodation with the places you want to go. Like in Hokkaido, there are limited and very expensive hotels in Furano and Biei area. I had to find hotel in Asahikawa and drive up and down everyday.

Yes,  exotic seafood is abundance in Hakodate and price seems acceptable.
