Trouble with nuts

http://www.bbc.com/n...d-asia-40664828

An allergy scare involving a three-year-old toddler has prompted Singapore Airlines to review the serving of nuts on board its flights.

Marcus Daley suffers from anaphylaxis, a potentially life-threatening condition which can be triggered by food including peanuts and shellfish.

He was travelling with his parents to Melbourne after a holiday in Thailand.

He suffered a severe allergic reaction after other passengers around him opened their snack packets of peanuts.

His father Chris Daley, a doctor specialising in respiratory issues, told the Australian Broadcast Corporation that his son received a special nut-free meal but quickly became severely ill when others were eating their nuts.

"He started vomiting, his eyes were starting to swell and he couldn't speak properly," Mr Daley said, adding that the family was less than an hour into their seven-hour flight home.

Thankfully, the Daleys had brought anti-allergy medication, which quickly brought the situation under control.

'A nut-free cabin'

Major airlines such as Qantas, Air New Zealand and British Airways do not serve nuts during its flights or offer them in in-flight meals.

Singapore Airlines issued a statement on Wednesday saying it would review the serving of nuts on board all flights.

to be fair to SQ, they were told not to serve peanut based meal to the kid which they did accordingly. SQ was not told the kid is also allergic to allergens in the air. Are the parents aware their kid is allergic to airborn allergens? if not, they can't blame SQ.

Just bcuz of one allergic,

everyone else around has to stop breathing ?

I think it's unreasonable, although I sympathise with the toddler.

Can you imagine everywhere he goes, as he grows up, he must have a "nut-free" cocoon around him.

Who's to ensure that ? The unknowing public around him ?

Not only SIA. The parents are campaigning for ALL airlines to stop serving nuts.

Pity the boy but the world doesn't revolve around him so his parents have to take the precaution for him. Not the other way round.

It's still ok for other pax to eat meals with nuts, e.g. satay sauce.

They are just referring to ban peanut snacks, i.e. those in packets, dried form. When torn open, the very fine peanut dust is released into the air.

Some european airlines already stop serving it due to this potential problem.

Even if all airlines stop serving nuts & ban eating of nuts in the cabin, the person who has life threatening reactions to airborne allergens should wear protective breathing apparatus to protect themselves.
Never knows what other airborne allergens there may be in the cabin or brought onboard via passengers' belongings & clothings.

I feel that it isn't fair to expect others to bend backwards to accommodate them when they themselves aren't taking the initiative to protect themselves in the first place, especially on a commercial flight.

Precisely.
They should be the one taking precautions for themselves rather behaving like as though everyone owes them a living.

Otherwise, stay at home don't go out.

Plane can crash, then how?.

Overview

Unlike other food allergies, which are typically first observed in babies and young children, an allergy to fish may not become apparent until adulthood; in one study, as many as 40 percent of people reporting a fish allergy had no problems with fish until they were adults.

Having an allergy to a finned fish (such as tuna, halibut or salmon) does not mean that you are also allergic to shellfish (shrimp, crab and lobster). While some allergists recommend that individuals with a fish allergy avoid eating all fish, it may be possible for someone allergic to one type of fish to safely eat other kinds. If you are allergic to a specific type of fish, your allergist can help you determine whether other varieties may be safe to eat.

Fish Allergy Symptoms
  • Hives or a skin rash
  • Nausea, stomach cramps, indigestion, vomiting and/or diarrhea
  • Stuffy or runny nose and/or sneezing
  • Headaches
  • Asthma
  • Anaphylaxis (less common), a potentially life-threatening reaction that impairs breathing and can cause the body to go into shock
