Mazda announces breakthrough in long-coveted engine technology

Mazda Motor Corp said it would become the world's first automaker to commercialise a much more efficient petrol engine using technology that deep-pocketed rivals have been trying to engineer for decades, a twist in an industry increasingly going electric.

The new compression ignition engine is 20 percent to 30 percent more fuel efficient than the Japanese automaker's current engines and uses a technology that has eluded the likes of Daimler AG and General Motors Co.

A homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) engine ignites petrol through compression, eliminating spark plugs. Its fuel economy potentially matches that of a diesel engine without high emissions of nitrogen oxides or sooty particulates.

Mazda's engine employs spark plugs under certain conditions, such as at low temperatures, to overcome technical hurdles that have hampered commercialisation of the technology.

Executive Vice President Akira Marumoto called Mazda's engine technology the automaker's "heart".

The engine is called SKYACTIV-X and Mazda had no plans to supply the engine to other carmakers, Marumoto said.

So......... Mazda is going to singlehandedly force UK and rest of EU to eat their own words when they already swore to go fully electric by 2040?

Doubt it... Mazda may be working hard to perfect the ICE, but the pressure is on to eliminate the use of gasoline entirely. Mazda is presumably hoping to slow down the clock.

eliminate gasoline? why? we have so much oil reserves now in the world

What kind of pressures do u need to ignite petrol?

If you read about Homogeneous Compression Charged Ignition(HCCI), this is possible.

I am more keen on qoros camless.

The Mazda has to do a switch in order to be acceptable on a day to day basis by start stop, use an electric motor for the inertia push and then start the engine to mask the vibration.

Not a biggie since they are in collaboration with Toyota for the electric hybrid

save money, no need change spark plugs!

There will still be spark plugs, for use when the condition is less than ideal for HCCI

Current Mazda Spark Plugs can already lasts 80,000Km,the new Engine, most likely lasts "Life of the Car"......the Spark Plugs will only needed if outside Temp near Freezing,S'pore outside Temp never dropped below 20'c...

fuel engines are not likely to be replsced in the next 30 years in my opinion. so  good that more efficient and less polluted engines be developed

just like every other person who does not follow the oil change cycle, I think there will be people who jump the gun and replace it at 40,000 km...

I wonder how HCCI combustion compares to F1's combustion process.

F1's tech is similar to that of a diesel engine where a small amouont of air/fuel mixture gets ignited in a mini chamber before it's released into the main combustion chamber except it uses a sparkplug where as diesel uses high temp/compression and self ignition.

Hopefully petrol engine could be made so efficient that one single drop of petrol could last for a long long time. -:)
