Do we do apprenticeships in Singapore??? How do electricians become qualified?? They become qualified once they have the experience from all sorts of electrical issues. How old is the son? Essentially the student (fresh ite or poly grad) get employed by a company then sent on a training course jointly developed by the company and a poly. Poly get to report the numbers (their kpi) and company gets grants ($) for each trainee. Upon completing the course, the student is employed by the company. But it's entry level paying 1.8k or so. Everyone here is called executive for clerk assistant manager for chief clerk engineer for technician/mechanic specialist for highly paid coordinator Seriously, title is very important for many people here including employers. That's why some inflate their titles in their LinkedIn and resumes. Seen so many already. As an apprentice, you may not have the dignity to talk to anyone. Correct. I feel apprenticeships scheme here still have long way to go. In europe, no one bats an eye about young people going in as apprentice. Why not? Especially if they are not inclined towards academics, it is a way to a respectable well-paid profession. Respect. Well-paid. Professional. These elements are still somewhat lacking in our apprenticeship scheme here though govt working very hard to change people's mindsets, the elite must set the example. How many allow their kids to go into these schemes? I think the kid's mom n pop allowance is more than the apprentice salary Side track a bit : i was reading about white house chief of staff John Kelly ... this guy is a former marine general, but he started as enlisted men. Even his son started as enlisted men though dad was already high up by then. It's not something strange in US. Likewise apprentices should be thought of in this light. Only when cases of electrical fire or electric shock happens, then find out that the work is done by unlicensed or unqualified people. I think even insurance claims will run into problems. Some people have the engineering background willing to run wires and DIY install lights etc. at home - this is quite common, but also unlicensed and at their own risk.
