In January 2000, after running Microsoft for 25 years, Bill Gates handed the reins of CEO to Steve Ballmer. Ballmer went on to run Microsoft for the next 14 years. If you think the job of a CEO is to increase sales, then Ballmer did a spectacular job; he tripled Microsoftâs sales to $78 billion and doubled profits from $9 billion to $22 billion. The launch of the Xbox and Kinect, and the acquisitions of Skype and Yammer happened on his shift. If the Microsoft board was eager only for quarter-to-quarter revenue growth, Ballmer was as good as it gets as a CEO. But if the purpose of a CEO is long-term company survival, then one could make a much better argument that Ballmer was a failure as a CEO the moment he optimized short-term gains by squandering long-term opportunities.

Companies live and die by customer satisfaction. Unless it’s a monopoly utility which, even if it didn’t give a flying fck what it’s customers thought, will still survive and plod on.
MS has done decently enough in recent years. The Surface and Win10 are good. Azure is good. Office subscription is good. Don’t know about the dynamics CRM.
MS did what they could. But they kept chasing Apple’s halo. Develop Zune to compete with iPod in 2007 but Apple already moved to iPhone by then.
Sunk money and time on Kin phone when they should have updated/developed new their Win Mo/Pho platform.
The number of tech they’ve thrown and left behind without any support is mind boggling.
Remember Play4Sure? A misnomer if ever there was one. It didn’t even play on their Zune a year later. You can get a ZunePass for music. Guess what... that was abandoned a few years later.
How the heck do you expect for any customer satisfaction or retention if they keep changing strategies?
Less said about the US$25b paid for LinkedIn... the better. At least Skype only cost US$8... but it’s lagging behind every other IM, casual video conferencing.
Do I think Ballmer did well? No... he wasted the companies goodwill on the wrong tech. Didn’t recognize the danger of mobile first development. Was too afraid not to rattle the twin cash cows of Windows and Office.
Currently... Xbox is lagging behind PS. Kinect has all but been abandoned. Hololens still stuck in the same trajectory for 3 years. And Skype... wtf is that? 🤷🏽♂
