Just wanted to share my personal film reviews of shows that I have watched either on TV, Netflix or in the theatre.

Hope these will help some of decide on what to watch during those wet, boring nights.

Film title: Independence Day: Resurgence

Film genre(s): Sci-fi, Action, Drama

Rating: 2.5 out of 5 popcorns

For those of you who can't get enough of Thor's real-life younger brother, Liam Hemsworth, from the Hunger Games, this is a great film with a lot more screen time of him. The story is a sequel to the 1996 blockbuster, starring Will Smith, Jeff Goldblum, and Bill Pullman. Whilst most of the original cast have returned to this sequel, except Will Smith, most of them returned only to be killed off at some point in the movie.

This story picks up 20 years after the first, as they approach the 20th year of Independence Day. Earth has grown united, and evolved the alien technology harvested from the first attack to build defenses that would ward off any future inter-stellar attacks. Only it doesn't. There are no clear protaganists, but the antagonists remain the same feisty armoured aliens that want to drill the Earth to drain her core. This begs to question: there are at least five other planets before you reach Earth - why are we the only ones getting targeted?

The introduction of the new "alien technology" that can kill them once and for all begs yet another question - if you have the technology to kill them, and already have saved people in a refugee planet to build those planets, why are you not mounting an attack or bringing some of those weapons with you to defend yourself?

The whole storyline is flimsily stitched together in a haphazard manner that one can simply say that they made it for the sake of making it without giving much thought as to how to further develop the franchise. While not totally unwatchable, one can conclude that this was made just to fleece off the popularity of the first film to earn more money for the filmmakers.

Agree? Disagree? Let's talk about.

It's pretty rubbish. Around that rating or 3 stars if I'm generous

Then I wonder bro, what's the point of starting a thread on movies if you won't write a review?

I leave it to the many bros who can write better than I, cheers.

For example, carbon is our master COE thread writer, but he does more than start it, he really a puts superb excel file and updates it each time.

I take my hat off ...

Oh well different styles I guess, cheers ..

Erm, the thread is about new movies to be released in the coming year.

So it like letting people know what new movies to expect in 2018.

Of course you can write reviews of the new movies in 2018 in the thread. It's about anything regarding to Movies to be released in 2018, e.g. reviews, expectations, release dates, news.

I try to write if I have the time, but you can contribute too.

Personally, I won't go to watch those 'remake' of classic movies by throwing in tonnes of CGI, just for the sake of making money.

No 诚意 at all.

Speaking of movie reviews, I enjoy watching the Honest Trailers series which pointed out many of 'blind spot' found in the movies [thumbsup] [thumbsup]

Oh yah, and I praised it. Really getting old liao. [thumbsup][laugh] [laugh]

And the more it makes this thread unnecessary.

Well, if the admins and mods deem this thread irrelevant, I'm perfectly fine to have it merged into the 2018/2017 thread. What I saw missing from the content in the other thread was the review portion - and no reviews for older movies, i.e. non-2017.

Just my humble tuppence.

This was the one with Marina Bay Sands destroyed ?? I've only saw the trailer briefly, and didn't want to watch it. [laugh] [laugh] But then again, I despise all movies that are big on CG and lacking in story telling.

Yes. But the Singapore looked more like HK or Macau.. LOL :XD:

Film title: Flight of the Phoenix

Film genre: Action, Disaster

Year released: 2004

Rating: 3.5 out of 5 popcorns

Only after watching the film for the first time did I learn that this was actually a remake of a 1965 film. Based on my first impressions of this film, it was a decent film to watch on a wet, quiet night - delivering a decent balance of action, drama and thrill.

The story is about a pair of pilots played by Dennis Quaid (who sports a 6-pack in this one) and Tyrese Gibson (coming off of his 2F2F fame) ferrying a cargo and their passengers across the Gobi desert, but find themselves stranded after crash landing from a sudden sandstorm. Rationing of food and water begins as the pilots decide to wait for rescue, and soon, a Lord of the Flies survival situation develops as the survivors get increasingly impatient and desperate.

Then coincidentally, one of the passengers just happens to be an experimental aircraft designer, specialising in building aircraft using unconventional designs. He assesses the damage to the plane and suggests that they can build a new plane out of it to escape the desert to freedom. The rest of the passengers are actually all metal workers, with all the right equipment on board the plane cargo to help achieve that result. And as they are building their plane, they are attacked by desert marauders who want to kill them for their valuables - which they managed to fend off. Eventually, they managed to finish the plane and escape successfully to return to civilisation.

Some of the well-made moments of the film were:

  • the fight for water, resulting in them losing an entire jerry can of potable water;
  • the discovery that Elliot, the aircraft designer, was actually a model aircraft designer; and
  • the engine start-up sequence towards the end of the film as they tried to start the finished plane and escape.

All in all, an entertaining piece that will leave you satisfied, but not overly impressed. Perhaps you might be impressed to see that Dennis Quaid had a sculpted body with a defined six-pack back in the day. Also stars Miranda Otto coming off her LOTR: The Two Towers fame.

Have you watched this film yet? Why not give it a try on Netflix or when it comes up on your cable movie channel?
