Car broke down - what car to get next?

Neutral Newbie

I am still quite a new driver and my first ever car just broke down.

I took it to a garage but it looks like to repair it could cost so much money that it's not worth it.

I've had my car for 9 months only (used car). It's a Vauxhall Corsa. I live in the UK and I need my car to commute to work as the public transport is not very good where I live.

I don't have a lot of money for a new car right now but I need one and I don't know much about cars but I don't want my second car to break down that soon again.

Any suggestions what would be a good second car that is not too expensive and won't break down that soon?

Thanks

Dude ... maybe I can give some advice. I was in the same situation as you a long time back. I had very little money but hard earned through holiday work as Temp staff.

I bought a Proton Saga ... Malaysian on the outside but all Japanese on the inside even the fuel cap! The car lasted me maybe 8-9 years before it finally broke down.

The advice - Get a Ford Focus (5 years old) if you have the cash. They are built to last in the UK. When Jeremy Clarkson doesn't drive one of his fancy cars the car he uses on a daily basis is a Ford Focus.

Stay away from Vauxhall (Opel) and French cars e.g. Renault - my experience - terrible cars!

Japanese cars are good and reliable but very very pricey in the UK apart from Nissan as they are made locally.

I hope the advice helps.

Ford is definitely your best bet, then Ford Fiesta and Volkswagen(manuals) then the japanese and Koreans.

Avoid Renault,and all other cars

Can still remember fifth gear trying to race a sportscar(forgot model) and a Ford Fiesta in a shopping mall to see who emerge victorious.

The video showed that what you need in a crowded context is not power, but handling...

Haha! I was in the UK and I bought probably the 1st batch of Proton Saga circa 1993 not the hatchback model but the Saloon model. It was huge, very basic and yet functional. There was no power steering, no airbags, no ABS absolutely nothing just pure manual transmission (5 speed no less!) but I loved it cos I bought it with my own hard earned cash! Parents were furious and called it a "jelopy". They offered my some cash to change the car but I refused.

I drove it for 8-9 years until the entire exhaust literally needed replacing ie the moment the mechanic touched it ... it broke! I sold it for 50quid.

Subsequently as I had a little more money ... I bought a Renault Megane coupe - Oh My God!!!!!!! It is up till this day the worst car I have ever driven!

I traded it in eventually for a nice red Ford Focus 2 door (not STI) and it served me well till my return to Singapore.

Apparently the proton saga in the uk has a sunroof.

Did yours have one?

Hmmm ... I think I had one but I never used it. It was not a proper "sunroof" - one could not slide it open but a marginal tilt. I didn;t use it much cos the more you open the likelihood of it leaking increases.

What's your budget for the car and what's your insurance group? Vauxhall Corsa is usually fairly affordable to maintain. If you are looking for reliable cars, can look at Nissan Mirca, Parts should be cheap and easily available since it is made in the UK.
