Facebook users here will be able to buy and sell items through the social media platform from Tuesday (Jan 23), with the launch of the Marketplace feature in Singapore.

Those using the latest version of the Facebook app will see the addition of a shopfront icon, while desktop users will see a new tab. The function will be rolled out over the next two weeks.

Marketplace, which is similar to local online platform Carousell, allows users to list and browse items for sale and filter results by location, price or categories such as furniture, electronics and apparel.

Personally have been waiting for this move for more than a year already. Would be an interesting additional channel for ecommerce. But as a consumer, I'm not sure if I want a business owner to have access to what is publicly available on my profile... double edge sword really.

agree, I do not wish the seller to be able to view my profile also.

Later if the deal didn't go through smoothly, would the seller/buyer post up the identity of another party and kpkb in FB?

Carousell doesn't charge anything right? Why do I need to move to facebook?

Got no additional benefits also.

think is for the convenience of people who do not want to set up another account at Carousell or anywhere else...

2 minutes thoughts on why i would advertise on Facebook as a seller:

1. Free

2. Probably very easy to use, same as Facebook itself

3. Consumers are already habitually refreshing Facebook thus increased eyeballs

4. Reasonably good ad targeting system already in place

5. Can CSI buyer

there will be ingenious ways to overcome. anyway there are already plenty of fake profiles on FB... so much so, the comments are like trash bin centres, go in at own risk [laugh]

Took a look at the current listings. It's not very intelligent yet - still shows me VN/ID/PH/TH sellers.

Local sellers CANNOT spell.

65% of inventory are obviously Taobao resellers.
