COE Bidding – 2nd Round of May 2018

May was æ¯æ¶åè¿åº. Today is the last chance for COE to spring up. Come June, nobody would want to pay $10K more for VES2.0, just to lose it when COE down $10K the next month. Just like last Dec, order slowed and by Jan, COE crashed.

By jan, Coe crashed? Where got crash?

From business times

Industry watchers expect premiums to trend downwards as a new emission ruling coming into effect in July may render several parallel imports less commercially viable.

VES rules are same for AD and PI then why only PI will be affected.

In general, PI's are faster to bring new models which comply with new rules whereas AD needs some time to get new models from principal.

It's usually the same person whom the media interviews, Mr. Raymond Tang [laugh]:

The last person i would want to hear advice from are car dealer and property agent.

Some of the PI cars may be impacted, and unlike ADs, PIs have limited models to import, they may have less options to offer but that does not mean they cant do business.

How do you arrive at the conclusion that PI are faster than AD in getting their cars to meet the rules? E.g. clear the VES emission checks? For a car to be registered post-June 2018, do you have an idea if the car importer risk and requirements are different for PI vs AD to comply with LTA? Bearing in mind PI bring in as a reseller (not a supplier but as a consumer providing own warranty) while AD are the original dealer (supplier).

Great if someone can clarify

VES 2.0 will only start from July 2018.... so between now till 2nd bid in June, there is still chance to book new car, get COE and register car before the VES 2.0 kick in... Expect dealer/agent to be more aggressive in their June bidding exercises as they have to clear their backlog before July...

Real life recent example: C-HR, Harrier, Civic hatchback etc PI brought first in Singapore. so PI's can bring low emission models also before AD.

Your point is correct in terms of bring the car on-road because AD get batch approval from LTA and PI need approval for each car which can take 1-2 months time depend on how busy LTA schedule. Once PI Models will be examined by LTA new emission rules then future incoming shipments for all PIs will be smooth so this wont affect in long run.

Also PI serve niche market and bring those models which are not available with AD,  so they are here to stay.

i suppose only CAT A cars will have increase post-July?

Depends by then will there be mass un-used PHVs released in the used car market to sell.

Hope PIs will bring in more interesting models.

Current range seems limited and boring.

It's a far cry compared to the 1990s.

Eh? There were much much less PI cars in the 90s. The range is boring now cause the Japanese manufacturers are boring. Their line up now is way different from the 90s. You need to understand the car buying public in Japan. Boring and kei cars sell.

Cat B

1st bid Nov 17 = $57K

2nd bid Jan 18 = $42K

Difference = -$15K

1st bid May 18 = $40K

2ns bid July maybe = 40 - 15 = $25K, possible?

I think 1990s have a lot of PI cars, compared to now.

Especially from Toyota.
