It's not that Chinese cannot make CPU,it's just how much true effort and resources they are keen to put in for something more expensive and harder to design and build than nuclear missile.

VIA, once a major cpu competitor to Intel and AMD is Chinese (ROC) but could not survive the race as the world will only buy the best despite huge investments and good talents. TSMC, UMC, .. are also Chinese (ROC) and are big players in high end chips.

And you might ask did China (PRC) not realize it's important from early on? Were they less clever? No, they were heavily invested in chip R&D. In fact, they've even funded one of the biggest fraud invention in Chinese history back in 2006. You wonder why they didn't check it was fraud? They did, it was validated and supported by the prestigious Chinese Academy of Sciences and funded by Central funds. When the fraud was exposed by third parties, none of the people involved were penalized. You wonder why? One of them recently got new funding from Alibaba. You wonder again? Keep wondering. I design chips for many years....

It’s not China don’t have the expertise , it is just suddenly USA cut off supply, how u get the chip immediately to assemble? ZTe must close shop....

Chip takes one year to design, months to fabricate, months to qualify and design win...

China chip design is pretty strong, probably second to USA

That is the difference between us and China in a trade war. US will be more democratic in its views, which China will try to divide and conquer. The can create major problems for selective US companies. China on the other hand can not only control the opinions and public dissent, but can whip up a lot of nationalistic fervor. that can be channeled to boycott US goods and also help the population endure the hardship from the trade war.

in today world trade, everything is inter linked. i think once you fight everyone lose. big countries can survive as they don't really need to trade with others. only need to tighten belt a bit.

usa is relying on arms and protection money but will also dry up with those paying also got no money.

These included a lack of theoretical scientific knowledge, a skills deficit in some areas, and insufficient patience and perseverance to see projects through, he said.

i totally agree with this part! especially the red portion!!! Chinese are always looking for the quick fix and quick buck and willing to screw everyone including their own people just to get ahead!!

this sort of mentality is pervasive in the whole culture. Thus it would take a generation or more to get rid of this and set them back on the right track.

I work with all countries in the APAC region, for most chinese it is $$ first!

Trump poised to escalate China trade war by publishing US$200 billion hit list of new tariff targets
SCMP TODAY: INTL EDITION
PUBLISHED : Wednesday, 11 July, 2018, 7:26am

The list is likely to be released week according to the people, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the matter isn’t public.

US President Donald Trump is preparing to release a list of an additional US$200 billion in Chinese products to be hit with tariffs, according to two people familiar with the matter.

The publication of the list starts a weeks-long process that includes a public-comment period and hearings.

The Trump administration on July 6 imposed 25 per cent duties on US$34 billion in Chinese imports, the first time the president has implemented tariffs directly on Beijing after threatening to do so for months. China immediately retaliated with duties on the same value of US goods, including soybeans and cars.

The US is already considering levying duties on a further US$16 billion in Chinese goods, after a public hearing later this month. China has vowed to retaliate dollar-for-dollar to any further US tariffs.

The new list would mark the latest escalation of the trade war between the world’s two biggest economies. Financial markets have so far shrugged off the first round of tariffs, which were long-telegraphed, with US stocks up since Friday.

The press offices for the US Trade Representative’s office and White House didn’t immediately comment.

The International Monetary Fund has warned that a full-blown trade war could undermine the broadest global upswing in years.

Trump last month asked the US Trade Representative’s office to identify US$200 billion of Chinese goods that could be hit with 10 per cent tariffs. Since then, the president has said his administration could impose duties on virtually all Chinese imports into the US.

Industry would be given time to comment on any new levies before they take effect.

Trump has been considering tariffs against China since his officials concluded in March that Beijing violates US intellectual-property rights, such as by forcing American firms to hand over technology.

sorry... childish question.

How does the expert count the Windows license that we pay?

If Microsoft keeps the money outside US, so not counted as export by US?

Amazon, Google, FB, Apple....?

The export is trillion by these few US companies.

Is it counted as international trade?
