Is it a free market or cornered market?

Isn’t it good for a consumer to pay cheaper car prices? Why would it raise concerns?

SINGAPORE: With some buyers showing concern over the full implementation of the Vehicle Emissions Scheme (VES), dealers are throwing together attractive packages to entice them back into the showrooms this weekend.

The VES, which was fully implemented on Sunday (Jul 1), was a factor behind the steep decline in COE premiums, experts said.

"Before the VES kicked in, some buyers could have felt that certain cars were affordable," said transport researcher Professor Lee Der-Horng. "Different buyers target different price ranges. So when the vehicle you'd like to buy is being affected, certain groups of buyers will be affected and this might be a reason for the drop in COE premiums.

............."In a few months time, people would have gotten used to the VES," said Mr Raymond Tang, managing director of Yong Lee Seng Motor. "If you need to use a car, you will still get a car. Since VES is there and implemented, it will be there to stay."

Indeed, for most buyers, the deal breaker would be COE premiums and not the VES surcharge.

"The VES situation does not affect my decision on whether to buy a car or not," said Mr Jeremy Lim, who is considering buying a new car instead of a secondhand one because of the drop in COE premiums. "It is not a game changer."

VES is just an additional  tax.

To many car buyers, they don't know what is this VES component.

They only look at COE prices. COE dive, they want to buy. COE up, they wait.

Some people asked me why car prices don't decrease by a lot since COE prices decreased for about 20k since last year, I explained to them about the VES component. Many are unaware of it, as an additional tax that adds to the cost of the car, nothing to do with COE.

Its like the petrol excise duty implemented just when falling crude prices seemed to offer drivers a respite from high pump prices.

COE is at a 8 year low but VES is a variable that affects the overall affordability of a new car.

Channel News Asia's headline was : Car dealers dangle discounts to attract buyers after emissions scheme raised concerns

Your topic title was: Why does Dealers dangling discounts raises concerns

TS, you have totally twisted the topic - it is not about dealers dangling discounts that is concerning, it is buyers being concerned about VES tax's impact on car prices.

IMHO, I don't remember seeing car price drops according to COE drops although the other way of going up is more likely.

No matter there is VES or not.

EV is expensive everywhere in the world.

You should get yourself updated on EV as more and more EV from major players will be launched.

Currently, Altis cost $103k.  Renault Zio cost 139k.

Full charge of Zio will cost about $10 for 350km.  How far can Altis travel on $10 of petrol?

Not forgetting that driver can set very aggressive Re-generative brake that will further extend EV range in the city.

The $9k COE drop goes to VES surcharge, glitch? Game changer?
The surcharge is worst than the premium you paid for in a new car, it also don't add on to the paper value.
One may think this extra on surcharge may add on to future resale value, probably is no.
